I was looking for general impressions and real world experience. I am thinking of making one on a P-14 action. Maybe for an Elk hunt that is being planned.

I do like to be different. I could go buy an off the shelf 338 win mag., but what its the fun in that? Some of the greater capacity 375s and 35s semm like they could be too much of a good thing. The H&H looks like velocity is pleanty, 2600fps, to shoot flat enough for real world hunting. Also seems that if you go much faster bullet break up and nosebleed recoil would become a problem.

The .375H&H with a 300gr. load at (typical velocities) has the same trajectory as a .30-06 180gr. load (at typical velocities).

The only 'downside' to using a .375H&H for elk hunting is that most .375H&H rifles are heavier than .30-06s or .338s.

If you don't mind humping a heavier rifle into elk country, a .375H&H will work just fine on elk.

The 375H&H worked good on this cow elk this past fall.

I've hunted in North America exclusivley with a .375H&H untill last season. I've killed 4 elk with it not to mention a pelethora of other stuff such as caribou, muledeer, a moose or two, coyotes, hogs galore, All kinds of plains game in Africa and even some praire dogs know and then. It's real easy round to get aquainted with. My favorite load is a 270gr X bullet loaded to about 2700FPS. Plenty flat,plenty hard hitting, and you can eat right up to the hole.

Mine weighs in at right around 8lbs. It started life as a Stainless classic M-70. I cut crowned and fluted the barrel knocking off a couple of pounds, And then put it into a Mac Millen stock. Finally topping it with a VariXIII leupold 1.75X6. It shoots great, I cut the barrel a bit short but it fits my purpose at 20" just fine as it rides in trucks nicely and fits across the back of my C-180's seat pretty as a picture.

If I were to do it over I'd leave the barrel at 22" or so. But notthing I've ever killed with it knows the difference.

scot--I've used my 375 a lot, but I like my 350rem. mag and CZ 9.3 also. I consider a 375H&H a medium bore.
The 350mag and 9.3 seem to have less recoil than a 338.

Try the 375H&H. You'll love it!!
I am on the 2nd barrel in my rifle. I think it's the finest "all-around" rifle in the world.

The .375 H&H is just the most versatile cartridge it is a gem and I love my cz heaps of power flat shooting and low recoil. Get it done you won't regret it.

I shoot two 375s and a 378wby, if you have a p14 you might consider the 378wby, great round.
