Federal 216 primers
I also posted this in the reloading section.

I picked up a Federal ammunition catalog and was looking at the specs for their "Cape.Shok" ammunition. For the 375 H&H and 458 Win the factory primer is listed as 215 but for the 416 Rem and Rigby and the 470 Nitro Express the primer No. is listed as 216. This is the first time I have heard of these. Are these 216 primers available to the public. They seem to be made especially for very large case capacities.

Have you guys found that regular magnum primers are adequate for the 416 Rigby?

I have had no trouble with the F215 in 416 rigby through 600 nitro.

Gentlemen

I know that the FED 216 was designed for the grand old calibers. I know that federal used it for 470 and 416 rigby in the start. I have asked them a few years ago and the reply then was -Not now but perhaps in the future?

the 2 1 6 is nearly impossible to get

the 2 1 5 lights off evertyhing that will hold a LRM primer, in my experience 577 nitro down

It appears that they don't package them for shipping but they might sell a large lot FOB their plant. I have the contacts if there is enough interest. All of the buyers would have to provide me with enough "approved containers" that I could ship them to you.

I would definitely be interested in several thousand. What type of "approved containers" would be necessary?

That's the catch. To legally ship them we would need empty primer boxes from any maker. Each manufacturer's box (I'm refering to the box of 100) is approved by somebody or other for haz-mat shipping. Then I would have to transfer the primers from the original packaging into these and box them up for UPS haz-mat shipping just like they came from Midway or someone else. My friend and I are working on this but so far neither of has agreed to be the "packer".
The second problem may be getting enough market to entice another production run. I don't know if they have surpus now or just enough for their projected ammo production. If there is enough interest in the forum we may be able to move Federal off dead center and make a new run and pacjage them for retail shipping. I will do some more homework on it.

I know I would be interested. And here I've been just throwing away MT primer box's for years If it looks like something might work out please let me know. I'll send you a PM...

there is little need for them other than in the big huge double rifle cases...

I would take as many as I can get...

tiggertate,

Thanks. If I have to I will empty enough primer trays/boxes to accomodate as many as I can order, and send them for filling for shipping. Alternatively, maybe Federal will sell enough empty primer boxes for shipping. Surely there are enough double rifle and large bore shooters here to make this happen.

I would take 10,000 F216's unless the price is substantially more than F215's.

Can't federal provide primer boxes?

Also, perhaps Superior Ammunition or Safari Arms (ammunition) would be interested in participating in the order since they both load a lot of big stuff.

I will ask all those questions. Either we will get some 216s or I will get a definitive answer why not. One of the things I fear is lurking out there is a liability if they are used improperly. After all, there is no loading data on them and they will light up hard if some fool uses them in a small case at max loading.
