56hawk600 Overkill Dies
Anyone know where to get reloading dies for the 600 Overkill. My gunsmith has just about finished my build, but we need dies so we can test fire it.

cal pappasWhat's the difference between the Ok and the .600 we all know and love? Can a set of regular .600 dies work? If so I have an extra set.

You mean the 600 Nitro? I'm guessing they won't work, but hopefully someone on here will know. The main difference is the Overkill is a belted case and the Nitro is rimmed. I think the case taper might be different too.

Idaho SharpshooterSince Wayne Jacobsen (www.AHR-hunting rifles.com) iirc, builds them you might try him for brass, dies, bullets, and loaded ammunition.

MatthewxThe case taper is different. You need different dies for 600 OK and 600 NE. AHR usually has them in stock as does CH4D.

56hawkThanks everyone. Just ordered a set from CH4D. They even had them in stock.

RobgunbuilderThe difference between the .600 ok and the .600 nitro is what NIGHT and DAY! No the dies are not interchangeable. The .600 ok starts where the .600 nitro ends. Yes CH4d has the dies and shell holder. -Rob

martWhen I read the title to this thread the first thought I had was, "I didn't even know the 600 OK was sick."

"...I advise the gun. While this gives a moderate exercise to the body, it gives boldness, enterprize, and independance to the mind. Games played with the ball and others of that nature, are too violent for the body and stamp no character on the mind. Let your gun therefore be the constant companion of your walks." Ended up using a starting load of 140 grains of IMR 4350 with a 900 gr Woodliegh. Gunsmith chronoed it at 1700 fps. Any idea what a max load would be? I figured I'd work my way up slowly.
Shot four rounds and recoil wasn't bad at all. Had a friend shoot the fifth round and the back of the bolt hit him in the face.

RobgunbuilderMax is 2400-2450 depending on your barrel with a 900 gr woodleigh. You can do 2750 with a 750 gr bullet. -Rob

RobgunbuilderMax loads are essentially all the 4350 powder you can put in a once fired case using a 24 inch drop tube and a 900 gr borerider bullet. The original three groove barrels are faster than the later made barrels. It will try and torque itself out of your hands at 2400 fps so hold on for dear life but rock with the recoil. You will only do this once or twice.
Nowadays I like the 750 gr bullets more than the 900s it's actually fun to shoot like that.-Rob

56hawkThanks, I worked up to 160 grains in 5 grain intervals. Recoil on the 160 grain load was pretty extreme. Didn't have my chronograph with me, so I have no idea what the velocity was. Barrel is a 21" nine groove. Oh, and the total weight of the rifle is 8 3/4 lbs.

56hawkGuess I should post a picture:
19 November 2013, 08:42
RobgunbuilderThe max velocities are obtained only with a 26 inch barrel with three grooves. I expect your below 2300 fps but it's starting to get pretty intense isn't it. Still puts a big grin on my face and keeps me in ibuprofen.-Rob

cal pappasGents:
Far too hot for my tender shoulder. In my old .600 double I use 160 grains of IMR 4831 to achieve only 1900 fps from a 26 inch barrel and the weight of the double is 15 1/2 pounds.
I'm too much of a girly man for what you guys shoot.

RobgunbuilderThe beauty of the .600OK is you can load it down to 1700fps ( or less) or up as far as your pain threshold will endure. With lighter bullets you can get 2750 ( or Better) all in a very shootable/affordable pkg. The first one I built on a CZ550 cost about $1500 in parts with me doing all the machining including making the brass cases.
Without a muzzle break at 2400fps you talking over 200ft lbs of recoil. Thats stout!-Rob

56hawkChronoed my load of 160 grains of IMR 4350 today. Did 2035 fps. Slower than I would have liked, but still good for 242 ft-lbs of recoil energy.
