Shot my new 458 Mag today!
She is a Ruger #1 witha Leupld 1.5x5 on it.
Loads tried...all shot at 100 yds.
350 Barnes X: 3.485" COAL
68gr RL 7 2350 fps .540"
76gr H4895 2325 fps .65"
500 gr Hornady RN: 3.500" COAL
74gr H4895 2148 fps .75"
As you might have noticed from the COAL she has a super looooooong throat, hence the (relatively) slow speeds with the 350 X's. Barnes claims 2485 fps or so with these loads. Nice gun though!

MARK H. YOUNGPop,
Great initial performance for your 458. I shot moose and caribou with mine and the 350X. My load is with H 4198 and gives an honest 2550fps out of a 20" barel. Perhaps you should give it a try. That combo is a real "Thumper" for medium game.
Regards,
Mark

AtkinsonI think the 350 gr. X bullet is fine for soft skinned game in the US...but I would venture to suggest that although the monolithics have changed the overall picture of bullets that common since suggest that we can only cut the weight back by about one bullet lighter...For Buffalo for instance a 500 gr. is the norm, but with an X bullet a 450 would be the 500 gr. conventional bullets equal...I say this because when expansion reaches its solid base ( with an X bullet ) then penitration stops..A 350 would fall short lenthwise I fear. It still takes that long base to drive that bullet..now I am talking in generalities as such things as bullet construction etc. can come into play but lets not get into that can of worms.
