New M70 .458 Question

Colt CommanderNew M70 .458 Question
I just unboxed this new Win. 458. I noticed the countersink to the muzzle, a type I have not seen before. Is this just countersunk? I know it may sound strange but at close examination it looks sleeved. Please tell me I am wrong.
don't worry mine is the same, and it is not what you think it is. ideally it protects the crown, when out bush, love mine...

I know it sounded strange, but the machining seems so well done that it looks to be a tube within a tube.

The action is but a spacer must be removed from the magazine well to accept the longer cartridges. Years ago my M-70 was rechambered to take the Watts at 2.85 and the Lott at 2.80, as well (of course) as the shorter .458 Win.

Walter ProciukThe action will have to be opened up as well. I remember speaking to CZ gunsmiths who spoke candidly about the teething problems they faced when they started offering the .458 Lott. The feed ramp needed changing and the rails had to be opened up. These original CZ Lotts did not feed. Handy on a dangerous game rifle. I would bet most of the home made .458 Lotts that have made over the years don't feed as well as the factory .458 Winchesters they replaced. Most gunsmiths are not big bore experts. Those that are will be busy. Be prepared to wait in line.

ZephyrAs far as the action is concerned spoke with Winchester at SCI, they say that the .458 is on the same action as the .375 and .416 which means they will be able to handle 3.60 length cartridges.

I bought a CZ-550 .458WM and due to the enormous magazine length of the CZ, I found it wouldn't feed well. I always wanted a Lott, so I had the chamber reamed to the Lott cartridge. The longer Lott cartridge improved the feeding completely.
So it's probably a case-by-case basis, as to whether re-chambering to the Lott cartridge would help.
It sure helped with my particular rifle.

I remember the posts that you put out when your Lott did not feed to your expectations. You doubled the magazine spring up or something to the effect of boosting the magazine spring strength .
In my own .458 Winchester in the CZ Safari rifle I had to polish the feed ramp extensively. The action and the recoil lug on the barrel were glass bedded, two cross bolts were added to the action, and a real recoil pad was added.
They were a little rough from the factory.

Demonical^ Walter, yes I did mess around with the magazine spring but that didn't help. My Lott has the standard single spring and it feeds great. That double spring idea was a 'brain-fart' of mine... didn't work, nor necessary etc...
Dogleg has that extra spring now actually.

It's called a recessed target crown. All of my rifles wear them as the add a bit of protection to your crown.
so the conversion to the 458lott is possible and simple with the new safari express, given they all have the the same action length. will there be any feed issues? will the dtock setup need to be changed, or is the stock standard win stock ok as is?

ApprenticeThe standard stock will work, but I would definitely re-bed the action with something other than the "hot glue" bedding it came with from the factory. I would have someone make you some Lott dummy rounds, that way you can check feeding before you have it rechambered. The round won't chamber all the way, but it'll chamber enough to let you know how things are going feed. I just did this with a Winchester Classic in 7mm that I was wanting to re barrel to 300 H&H.
