PCI personally like both the .375 H&H & the .416 Rigby. I don't like the the look of the other two.

NitromanI am still dreaming of an all original W-R in .425.
I remember back in 1988 when I first saw an A-Square Hannibal, I had to have one and then it was some years before situations came into being that allowed I could.
It will be this way for the W-R but I will get one. I know I could have others more "useful" or a better word; practical but I still want one.

It is hard to like the .375 H&h more than a .416 Rigby. For me these 2 rounds are great.

JohnTheGreekI would own a .404 Jeffery if one fell into my lap for a screaming deal but other than that, in a bolt gun, it will be a .416 Rem Mag for me!!

N E 450 No2Scrap all those "bolt action trash" rounds. The REAL 40's are the 400 Jeffery 3", and the 450/400 Nitro Express Magnum 3 1/4".

MacD37If you insist on me useing a clunky old bolt action, then the 404 would be my choice, because balisticly it is a 450/400NE 3"in a bolt rifle.
I agree however if you want a NEW round in the .40 cal range, the 416 Rem is a fine choice, and is a very well ballanced cartridge!

You got that right!
The 416 Rigby makes even the 375 H&H a bit less adorable!
But the 375 H&H makes a nice varmint gun with light bullets, yet can be loaded with heavies for dangerous game.
A light weight 375 H&H does make a better sheep rifle than a 416 Rigby, however.
As I get older, I see myself wanting to shoot my 500 A-Square's less and less, primarily as a stunt.
So there will always be room in my heart for a 375 H&H, a 416 Rigby, and a 470 NE double. It's funny how some cartridges will not die and simply increase in popularity with knowledgeable shooters, as the fads pass away.
Mostly I like the bolt action trash, however.
The 416 Rigby is the boss. No denying it.

AtkinsonThe ones I own and chose are:
1. 450-400-3" Jefferys double rifle, true love.
2. 375 H&H always a winner, will always surfice.
3. 404 Jefferys truly a wonderful caliber, best of the bolt guns for DG.
4. 416 Rem. probably the most practical and as good as any...
Honorable mention but not within the scope of the question: 9.3x62 Brenneke, it has served me well.

I agree that the .404 will do ANYTHING a .416 Rem will do except be associated with readily available components.
Gallensons in Salt Lake City has a few thousand pieces of brass just waiting for me in their storage room and bullets galore. Tough to change horses in mid stream for me when it comes to ammunition.
.404 is damn classy though.
