CZ 550 or ZKK 602
What is the differences between the older BRNO CZ Mauser actions the ZKK 602s and the current CZ 550s.

Is the older 602 action preferable to the current 550?

I want to source either a second hand CZ (ie a 602 or a 550) or a new one (ie 550) to be made into a 458 Lott.

I assume both are magnum length actions.

Thanks

Nitro,

For a start check John Rick's photos of the two actions:

The actions are essentially identical. The trigger of the ZKK-602 was liked by no one I ever met. The safety is on the EURO side and it has no bolt shroud. The CZ-550 addressed these issues and is also finished a bit better, with fewer tool marks and a richer blue.

Ditto Nick.

Having done both, I would go with a newer CZ 550 rather than the bigger rework required on the Brno ZKK 602. At least the safety works in the proper direction on the 550, while the original 602 is bassackwards and could get you killed if you are used to the vast majority of firearms function. A Winchester style wing safety (3-position) or a Mauser "Flag" safety would improve either action however.

Both actions will fit the same stock. You just have to mill out the trigger well of the 602 stock to drop the 550 in. A 602 will fit in a 550 stock with no fuss.

Converting a CZ 550 in 458 Win. Mag. to 458 Lott/Watts/Ackley/Barnes Supreme is really a breeze. A great way to get a good rifle.

I agree. My .450 Rigby is built on a 602 that had the M70 safety from PME and a Talley peep sight added. Some day I'll put a more attractive stock on it but as a buffalo killer I would have to hunt hard to beat it. The big Czech actions are built like bank safes.

I believe the 550 now has the 3 position safety as an option from the factory???

Its a three position safety on the regular and medium action. On the safari its only a two position safety.

I would not consider this very important, as I point my barrels in a safe direction anyway ...

For disassembly of the bolt there is another device. Follow the directions, its very easy.
