Guess I just gotta vent. For a mighty fine rifle out of Austria, it sure is a piss poor designed Magazine. You'd think they could design one that can be used, especially if not abused. Maybe I just got a couple lemons, but they are the worst Magazine and do not do justice to a quality rifle.

The tabs you push in to release the magazine break off. Have now got 2 busted and 1 working, and they ain't cheap @ $75 a piece. There's not a glue made that will hold them together, tried some good ones.

OK, vent over, any others have el cheapo Steyr polymer rotary mags, or am I the only unlucky sucker, lol.



At least it pulled it's weight and didn't break in Africa.

Have you contacted the Steyr agents / suppliers notifying them of this issue ? Considering the pursuits such a rifle is likely to be put to this kind of failure is unacceptable. I would hope Steyr would promptly act to see you right on this.

I did think of contacting Styer, but thought they'd think I'm just a whiner. I'll give them a shout out, can't hurt. I did look and see they still sell them, when and if they get them in stock that is, thanks.

Looks a lot like the magazine in my SSG.

I haven't used that too vigorously, its a range toy for me.

It did strike me a a bit less sturdy than the rest of the rifle. Especially given its supposedly a sniper rifle...

But it is very reliable in feeding as long as its in one piece.

I have a Steyr Model S in .458 Win Mag.

I think I have a total of five magazines (my Model S has a spare magazine carrier in the stock) and all but two have cracks from the recoil generated by a 500 gr bullet exiting the barrel at 2100 fps.

I agree; the Steyr magazines could certainly be improved. That said, the Steyr is about the finest production rifle I've owned.

ONly Savage and their mod. 99 knew how to make proper rotery magazine, they have lasted many many years..

I’ve got one of the original Scout Rifles in 308. Never had an issue with the polymer maga.

Not a lemon but the natural result of chemical degradation of polymers. Polymers are all prone to this. I have a M72 Steyr Mannlicher where the magazine spindle and wing simply disintgrated.

All my old Gerber hunting knives with the soft rubber handles from the 80's have gone gummy !

I’ve got one of the original Scout Rifles in 308. Never had an issue with the polymer mags.

Just to close the loop --

1. Sent email to contact at Steyr a few days ago, no reply or answer.

2. Called Seyr USA Rep, Herbert, he's got magazines for sale. Couldn't actually talk with him, via leaving messages.

3. This Steyr Tropen magazine is DIFFERENT than the Scout or SBS magazines, which apparently are made better.

Still think these magazines suck royally ;-)
