Fred,
You can go for the .404 Dakota too.

<allen day>Are you really and truly planning to use this creation on DG, especially in Africa?
I ask this because wildcats are never a good idea for honest African dangerous game hunting, no matter what sort of wonderful ballistics you can produce with any of them.
For one thing, if your lose you ammo due to airline problems, etc., and the nearest source of resupply is some 10,000 miles away, your pride and joy will be out of commission for the duration of the safari -- shut down before you ever arrive in camp.
For another thing, the headstamp on your cartridge case needs to match the caliber designation on your barrel, or else you may have a rather unpleasant and lengthy discussion ahead of you with the customs agents.

Kurick1Just wondering if any of you have had any experience with modifacation of a Remington 700 UM action into anything over 375. As I am a lefty, and I would like something larger than 375 for a DGR and don't want to sell the farm, the dog, the cat's etc to build one. I've been watching for a lefty in 375 from Winchester, but haven't had much luck other than they are made. The 338 Ultramags are readily available on the market(I have one)and thought this might be an option. I saw the Lazzeroni 416 as a possibility if the 700 action will work, but wondered if anyone had converted a 404 case to 458 or 470 range? I'm looking to duplicate something in the 416 Rigby class or 458 Lott cartridges. Your help would be most appreciative, sometimes one needs other opinions to think outside the box.
Thanks in advance!

fredj338Ah, you're right Jim, but I would see little use in a .404 Daota when I can have the original! The .416Dakota is interesting only in that you can use all of those great .416 bullets.

I'm off in 14 days to trade blows w/ a buffalo. A report will be in order upon my return.
