577 BPE Advice

I have friend with a 577BPE (3 inch) that wants to shoot smokeless powder under a 650grain bullet, but stay in the BP pressure range. Is WC860 a good choice for this combo? If not, what would be good choice? I shoot BP and this white powder is unfamiliar ground so I defer to you experts.

He needs Graeme Wright's book, for sure. All you need to know about smokeless loads for BP rifles.

Someone here may already know the answer, but I recommend that he buy "Shooting the British Double Rifle" by Graeme Wright.

There is nitro-for-blackpowder loading data in there for the .577BPE

normal load for the 3" is 167 grains of black.

I got my load from graeme wright's book and i use a load of 78 grains of H4198 with a foam filler +/- a few grains, depending on which gun i am using, behind a woodleigh 650 BP slug.

works a charm.

For 20+ years the standard formula for nitro for black loads to approximate the original bp load was this: 40% of the charge of black powder and use IMR 4198. Nothing is carved in stone, but this a good place to start. You may have to move the charge up or down to get the bullets to print an acceptable target. My (former) .577 used up to 83 grains. Good luck. This is what makes shooting these old timers so much fun.

I would also contact Accurate Arms and ask for loads using 5744. It works really well in the old large volume cases and fillers are not required nor recommended.
