Just picked up a .458

I havent had a big bore for a while ,but just bought a Zastava .458. I know its no Purdey 577(Though if any one is giving one away, I would be a good home) but it will do until I get a CZ550 in 458 and turn it into a 458 Lott or 500 Jeffrey. What are the Mark X actions like, for strength, reliability etc? Do they have any bad points to watch out for?

cr500 I think the 458 is the best of the big bores for a persons first one, or for anybody who wants to shoot a big bore a lot. Brass is easy to get and inexpensive. There are so many different 458 cal bullets avialable for all sizes of game from deer to elephant. My favorite "light" bullet is the 350gr. Hornady SP, but since you are in the land down under you can probably get the 350 Woodleigh cheaper than the Hornady. The various US made 300 and 400gr bullets do best if loaded under 2000fps. I have used the 350 Hornady at 1900fps in a 45/70 to 2330fps in a 450 No2 with excellent results.

You might like to try the Rem 405 gr .458 cal bullets they make for the 45/70 they will open up real fast at .458 win mag speeds. You can get them at the shooters warehouse in Canberra there about $40.00 per 100.

Major Caliber

I've got a Mark X in .458win, it shoots everything sub moa, even cast bullets.

For pigs I will be using the 300gn Hornadys(I have plenty left) Since the 405s are pretty cheap I might get some of them for playing around .For cheap practice I will be using 350gn teflon coated cast bullets for $26 for 250.

I got the gun with about 50 rounds loaded with these Hornadys which he said shoots best so I will be giving these a go, also loaded to about 45/70 velocity(or so I,m told).

where it me, I wouldn't shoot someone else's reloads. I don't care what he said about the loads, even though my wife would be well takencare of in the insurance...

CR 500 even if you pull the heads and put your own powder charge in. You just never know if he may have stuffed up accidently.

I want a .458 now to ream out to a lott, your making me jelous talking about all the fun you will have with this .458 [Wink]

Normaly I would never use anyones reloads that I knew nothing about but as this guy I got them from does work for the gunsmith and is a sensible sort of guy , I will give some a go (using shooting glasses). His other fired cases show fairly low presure signs(as he said).
If your jealous of my cheap Zastava 458, how do you think I feel about hearing about all these other guys ,Lotts,505s, 600NEs ,various double rifles etc. Oh well soon, I hope to get a cheapish double rifle to play with.
