Short 50 project - 500 Phantom
Just an update on my short 50 that I'm building on an AR-10 Its still with Marty at Teppo Jutsu, but the gun is complete and Marty is going to take it on a range trip to see if it can hold a group. Here are some pics of the gun: JP Enterprises hand guard and brake with a 24 PACNOR barrel. The bottom pic is a sample of the 50cal bullet choices loaded in custom 500 Phantom brass from Horneber. All are mag length except the AMAX, that would be single feed.

L to R:

308 Winchester

500gr Hawk RN

700gr Hawk SP

525gr Barnes Solid RN

570gr Barnes XLC

168gr Sierra MK Sabot

622gr USGI API

750gr Hornady AMAX

I think I need to find a cheaper hobby...

Joe,

With more typical hunting style bullets that cartridge appears it would work in an AR15 as well. What kinda COL does it have, when not loaded with high BC 50 BMG style projectiles?

The case capacity is very close to the 50 Beowulf, by the way, the 50 Beowulf runs between 69.8 grains - 72grains. The Beowulf's problem is an incredibly weak web area, which limits pressures to less than 50Ksi peak (around 50Ksi the case head begins to flow). What is the web thickness in your wildcat?

Won't work in an AR15, the brass is way too wide to fit in the magazine, and the boltface on an AR15 can't be machined big enough to handle it. Also, the lugs probably won't be able to handle that much thrust on them.

What are the anticipated ballistics?
Gotta say, that A-Max looks right funny on there.

ScottS - I didn't know the answer to your question, so I decided to sacrifice one for the sake of science. And, since this case was one of the prototypes and cost almost US$7.00, it really was a sacrifice.

You can see, Dieter made these babies plenty beefy. I don't know what other cases look like, but the .075" at the flash hole seems like plenty of brass. But, I'm curious to know what you think???

thanks - joe

Very interesting, Joe. Do you have any estimates on velocities with the various bullets?

Are you going to the Harrisburg show? I'm going next Saturday.

Estimated velocities

Barnes 525 RN at 2000 fps
Barnes 570 XLC at 1700 fps
Hornady 750 Amax at 1040 fps
Hawk 500 SP at 1900 fps
Hawk 700 SP at 1600 fps
168 MK in sabot at 3300 fps

These loads are all at LOW pressure (45K psi). I think the picture of the web shows that the case can handle quite some pressure, I would not think 68K is out of reach, however, the AR action may not appreciate it ....

GeorgeS - Probably not going to make it to Harrisburg next week. The Air Guard owns me for the weekend... And, I have to save my pennies for the SHOT show...
