Try going back to the AR homepage and look up reloading data. It will look like this: http://www.accuratereloading.com/470ne.html

The A-Square manual is great for pressure data:

I highly recommend H4831 SC for the .470 NE with 500 grain bullets to give standard 2150 fps loads.

I will still use RL-15 and filler, but that will peak over 40,000 psi for a 2150 fps load.

Here is a sample of the A-Square data for a 26" barreled double (A-Square brass, no filler, CCI-250 primer, 500 grain A-Square Monolithic Solid (brass)Eeker not recommended in an antique double!):

RL-15 89.0 grains: 2113 fps: 40,000 psi
RL-15 90.0 grains: 2162 fps: 42,900 psi

H-4831 109.0 grains: 2075 fps: 32,600 psi
H-4831 113.0 grains: 2162 fps: 36,100 psi

I have found that my Merkel (23.6" barrels) gives 2100 to 2150 fps with H4831SC at charges of 108.0 to 110.0 grains, respectively with a North Fork .475/500gr monometal copper banded Flat Nose solid or Cup Point, F215 primer and BELL brass. No filler.

My best load was 2125 fps with 109 grains H4831SC for the above components (23.6" Merkel).

I "guess" it is around 35,000 psi.

In Graime Wright's "Shooting The British Double" Bell Casses, Fed 215 Primer, 500 grain Woodleigh Soft point, and 105 grains of IMR 4831 gives 2052 fps at 12.1 tpsi or 27,104 psi.

Using a Bertram case, Fed 215 Primer, 500 grain Woodleigh Soft Point, foam filler, and 87 grains of Rel 15 gives 2260 fps at 13.1 tpsi or 29,344 psi.

In my Krieghoff 470 I use Bell brass, Fed 215 Primer, 500 grain Woodleigh Soft Point, Kynoch foam filler, and 88 grains of Rel 15 and chrony out at 2134 fps. Interpolating Wrights information, I believe my pressure to be in the 28,000 psi range.

Searcy loads his 470 to 106 Gr IMR 4831 for 2150 fps---no dacron. He used to load 108 Gr IMR 4831 to 2250 fps.

IMR is a bit hotter thasn H

The Woodleigh Softs will indeed give lower pressure than the A-Square Monolithic BRASS solids that have full contact bearing surfaces. thumb

It is really hard to screw up with the .470 NE, unless you do something stupid like use a solid brass full bearing bullet.

Using the A-Square pressure data gives a great margin of safety however.

We should specify barrel lengths whenever we compare velocities and pressures. For example, it is hard to believe that Searcy gets 100 fps velocity change with only 2 grains of powder change in this voluminous case: must have been a barrel variation there!
