Charles_HelmFN Solid Meplat Question
Does someone know if the GS Custom and North Fork FN/FPS solids have similar meplat sizes for caliber? Specifically in .458 450-grain?
Also, did North Fork ever use an ogive rather than frusto-conical design?
Thanks for the input. Just playing with my .458. Feeds and ejects just fine in front of the television, but sputters a bit in front of
loxodonta africana .
Charles,
I cannot tell you exactly the Meplat sizes of the North Fork "FP" vs. the GSC "FN" solids, but I can tell you they are very similar.
Yes, Mike Brady started off making his FP with an ogived shape similar to the Barnes Banded Solids: like a roundnose with a flat meplat.
When he changed to the truncated cone shape (like the GSC FN), his entire left-over stock of the Ogive-FN Solids of .458/450gr variety got sold to me at discounted price, for plinking. Swell guy that Mike Brady.

Charles_HelmThank you sir! I was just wondering if one tapered more than the other as they look similar. It sounds like they are close enough that feeding would be similar.
My dummy rounds have the earlier design,so clearly Superior Ammo had a few on the shelf.
The dummies used by my gunsmith have the newer design. I suspect any function problems are due to user error, but will be checking it out.

Charles, I would think a bit more "tweaking" is needed on the feeding. As NF FPs feed flawlessly in my Lott. Cannot feel them being picked up or on chambering. Just like working the bolt over an empty magazine.

Maybe. The are pretty slick normally. Something about adrenaline seems to cause a problem. I have to make a trip to the gunsmith anyway so we shall see. I have also heard that the Lott may feed better but I am not clear why that is. May check the mag spring as well to see if it can be improved.
I gave it another 1000 cycles of action smoothing this evening, just a lubricated bolt and no dummy rounds. Eventually we will get it fully sorted!
