Ruger 77 416 Rigby scope suggestions?

Guys, I'd like to get around to scoping my model 77 in 416 Rigby in teh next couple of months and I'm looking for any suggestions. want something for $500 or less preferably. Leupold, or maybe a Burris safari. The toughest part is the mounting. It has to fit the long action and widely space rings unfortunately.

Thoughts? Suggestions?

Most 77's fit the VXIII 1.5-5. It is a tight fit but seems to work well for most. You could mount the FX 2x28 ultralight, but the rear mount will be on the threads.

My CZ in 416 Rigby seems to me to be about the perfect out to 300 yard rifle. It wears a Leupold 2.5-8X scope in medium rings. Shop here for a used one if you have that budget.

Excellent guys, thanks for the suggestions, keep'em coming. My father also had a 2.5-8x on his CZ in 458 Lott. Just hadn't decided if I wanted to go that route or not. May just have to give it a try.

My 416 Rigby RSM wears a Leupold VXIII 1x5 as others have suggested. I've also used my older Leupold 3x as a backup. The 3X with it's long straight tube fits very well. Unfortunately, Leupold stopped making these scopes years ago.

Anything will work fine, as long as it's a 1.5-5 Leupold.

I have found the Leupold FX 2.5 UL on my RSM to be one tough scope and as mentioned does end up w/ the rear rings engaging some of the threads for the eyepiece, but no problems. Have variables, not a fan of them, feel the simpler the better but to each his own.

Had a leupold 2.5 M8 (now called ultralight) on my 416 M77MKII...

I took it to Zim as a back up for buff and wasn't worried about magnification...

I wasn't intending on hunting PG but killed both my bull buffs halfway through my hunt...

I wanted to keep hunting so I took my 416 after whatever PG they had on quota (put my heavy back in the gun case)...

2.5X worked fine on baboon and impala out around 150 paces (buff cow at 40)...

Passed up a Kudu at long range but probably woulnd't have taken that shot regardless of what scope I had...

This last post is why I put a 2.5-8X on mine. If 2.5X is too much, you need to go to the irons. At 8X it will work out to 300 yards on the sticks.
The 416 Rigby and the 404 Jeffery's are that versatile, IMHO.

Got it guys. Thanks. I know that the variable might be cumbersome, if I have a shot where the range is getting a little long, it'd be mice to have a little more magnification. Plus, I'll likely be using it for plains game or something here in north America well before I use it for DG. So it sounds like the 2.5-8 is probably where I'll end up. Then if I'm going after DG, I'll either pull the scope (not likely) or get a small fixed power. If anyway, has any other suggestions though let me know.

My Ruger M77 RSM wears a Zeiss Conquest 2.5-8x32 which is ideal with the intergal quarter-rib and plently long enough to bridge the big RSM action. Used this rig on buff this year.

My next choice would be the Zeiss Conquest 3-9x40 (not sure about the 40mm objective clearing the quarter-rib however).

I would definitely go with the 1.5-5x20 Leupold with the German #4 reticle. I've had one on my .375 for four years. A new one is going on my new .458 Win soon.

I've killed two buff with the .375, one at 20 yards. The 2.5 would have been too much at that range. You never know. I've also taken plains game at over 300 yards. The larger field of view with the low power will come in handy if a buff appears at 15 or 20 yards. And if you can't hit a wildebeest at 300 yards with a five power scope, you need to practice more.

At 20 yards any scope would frustrate me. Under 50 yards, irons.

Plenty of experience talking scopes here. I think you will be happy with the 2.5-8X. I have them on two other big bore rifles.

Depends on what you are shooting, but 5 power is good for 300 yd shots on Large critters. Us Army takes man size targets out to 800 yds on 10x, a 5x should be good on buffalo size critters.

2.5x is a disadvantage for dangerous game. With 1.5 power and less you can bring the gun to bear with both eyes open and still be able to see the target through the scope.

I'll stick with my suggestion, if 2.5X is too much you need to flip those two levers and look at your iron sights.

Easy boys. Back on topic. I'll tell you what I'd like to have, but they no longer make it... I would like to have a Burris Sig. Safari 1.75-5x32 with the LRS Fastplex reticle. That always seemed like it would be a perfect reticle for something nasty, and it falls in the range, power wise, of what we're all talking about here. Problem is Burris doesn't make the scope anymore, and they're hard to come by. I did find one for sale on the www, but it doesn't have the Fastplex reticle. Regardless, I think it'd probably meet my requirements. Anyone know if the scope itself is long enough in the tube to fit the ring spacing on the Ruger? I'll call Burris if I have to, I just thought I'd see if anyone knew or had experience with the scope. Seems to me that I did a search on here a while back and the reviews of the fastplex version were good atleast.

I put a Burris 30 mm Euro-Diamond in 1x4x26mm with german 4p on a ruger 375 alaskan. I used warne QD rings.

The setup works great. If you can't find the Sig. Safari..you might consider this scope. I think it should fit your 416 no problems.

Think I paid about 460$ for the scope a couple of summers ago. Nice, tough scope with 30 mm tube and the burris posi lock.

Leupold makes a 1.75-6x which is a good scope, not sure if they will match the Burris reticle though.
