.600 OK

Dave Bush.600 OK
guys, what happened to the .600 OK? No one seems to be talking about it anymore and as near as I can tell all the pictures have been deleted.
I shot one of Wayne's guns with a brake and found that it really wasn't unpleasant to shoot and, with the brake, it can be built so much lighter than and cheaper than a .600 NE. Anyone building one?

BiebsDave, you're right about the 600 OK. I owned and shot Safarikid's "Tembo", which was 9 1/2 lbs, and didn't find it objectionable. Not a plinker, for sure, but as long as the velocity is kept in the 2,200 fps range, it is very "hunt-able"....not a stunt gun by any means. For the largest game at close range, I can't think of a better round.
26 February 2011, 23:24
CCMDocHey Dave,
I think all of the folk who were enthusiastic about getting one, actually did get one and realized, as you have and s Biebs said, that it's no big deal. The "hoopla" died down simply because as Biebs said, it's no stunt gun but actually a very useful and practical caliber and round.
Plenty of us have used them for African Dangerous Game hunts and have been thrilled with the results. That's no surprise and it also puts to rest the B.S. about .620 bullets not penetrating or not penetrating well enough. I mean, when one penetrates a Cape buffalo from stem to stern and exits, probably good enough penetration.
As you know, I am thrilled with mine and as mentioned in another thread (the 750NE thread on DR), I've put many hundreds of rounds through it.

BiebsHey 600 Overkill, unless you're standing 10 feet behind the Hog in the photo, that is about the biggest pig I've ever seen!!! You'd better call Wayne to start him up on a 700 AHR !
28 February 2011, 05:22
bigdoggy7002 from Wayne at AHR. and 1 from Mike at Bijou Creek are around, I ended up with 3 of them. Great guns and a great cartridge.

RobgunbuilderWell the .600OK just plain works and has lived up to all it's expectations. It doesn't have all the problems other builds have and doesn't need exotic bullets to get the job done. Thus not the fan fare you get with guns that don't work properly. Those who know what they are doing will buy one or have it made. Those that don't know what they are doing will do what they always do. Talk!-Rob

Rich, I didn't know you were building one. Very cool. What weight did you suggest for your rifle?
P.S. I read the other thread. Don't let the bastards get you down!

BitterrootDave,
The one you shot weighed about 11 lbs. If you plan on using it only at the range, I would go up to 12 lbs. or more. If you are going to carry it hunting often, then keep it around 11 lbs. Keep some weight to it. No use beating yourself up.
28 February 2011, 21:39
CCMDocDave,
Come around this way and you can shoot my 600OK as much as you want with and without the brake attached. We can even wrangle my dad's 585AHR from him and compare.
Stay well and have fun,
Paul

Dave BushThanks Paul. I put in for retirement on May 31st. I want to do some traveling and I am sure that I will get back your way. I am going to the Jersey shore in August for a family reunion of sorts. Would love to stop in to see Ken's shop and maybe hook up with you and Biebs for a little shooting. I also want to get down to meet some of the guys in Texas and take a picture of Mac shooting my Blaser S2

CCMDocJust give me a heads-up when you will be around here and we'll make it a date. Only been to the Jersey Shore once since moving here so maybe we can start or finish at the shore with the families.

Idaho SharpshooterDave,
1. I always consider the source, whether it is complimentary or just chickens scratching around in the dirt to get some gizzard chat.

2. IIRC, Wayne and I were thinking around eleven pounds, or a hair more. I am working on its' maiden voyage to Zim for Buffalo preparations.

RobgunbuilderThe .600 ok is a experts gun! Designed by experts, built by experts and shot by experts! Those who have them have been around the block a few times and know exactly what they are doing! It's a elite group! It's not about fanfare and hype, it's about the most practical and useful of the ultra-big bores. It just does what it was designed to do without problems!-Rob

Yeah, I could be mistaken for a double-rifle owner; I hadn't thought of that.

I'm thinking about selling mine. I never shoot it anymore.
