CraigP470 Capstick
Can anyone tell me anything about the 470 Capstick? Am I correct that this cartridge is based on the full length H&H case and being based on that case is compatible with any action suitable for the 375 H&H? If you happen to shoot this round could you tell me about your rifle and any load data you might have? Thanks.

Rusty GunnIt is indeed an opened-up H&H case, thus can be used in any suitable action using this length of case.
'George S' seems to be the resident expert in this cartridge, he shoots one, and has hunted Africa with it. I'd suggest asking him for load info. ~~~Suluuq

<WSJ>The A-Square loading manual lists loads and has the usual brief summary description of the cartridge and its history.
I believe Winchester still offers it as a custom shop option on one Model 70 or other. I think I first saw it listed in their 1998 catalog.

John RicksI will be building one for a client as soon as the Krieger barrel arives, hopefully in a week or two. It's on a M70 Classic, blued action, CrMo barrel. Any action with a 3.6" or longer magazine will work.
It's just H&H brass with the largest bullet that will fit the almost straight cylindrical brass.
If you are interested I will post a photo of the cartridge and a 458 Lott & 375 for comparision.

500grainsI have one on a mauser 98 and I am very pleased with it. It is far more accurate than my 458 lott.

GeorgeSCraig,
I have a Winchester M-70 .470 Capstick. It started out as a .375H&H; it has a 24" Pac-Nor barrel, NECG 3-leaf express rear sight, barrel band front sight w/hood, re-inforced stock, 2 Dead Mule recoil reducers, and a KDF brake (and thread protector).
The guns weighs 10.75lbs. unscoped. Currently, it wears a Burris 2.5x in Kimber-style lever QD rings.
I get 2380fps w/500gr. Woodleigh bullets using IMR-4064. Muzzle energy is 6300ft.-lbs. Recoil is 74ft.-lbs.
Here are some pics:
That's a .375H&H on the left, the .470 Capstick on the right.

A .470 Capstick round next to a .270 and .22-250. Impressive, huh?

470FANCraigP,
I have a custom shop Model 70 I purchased from Winchester at the SCI show in Vegas two years ago. I have not shot it yet though. I have two boxes of loaded ammo form Superior Ammo and have proper headstamped brass. Brass can be obtained from
www.huntingtons.com. If I didn't have my heart set on killing my first buffalo this July with my 470 double, this rifle would be going with me.

500grainsGeorge, I am trying to think if I have seen that scope before...

GeorgeSDan,
That's a 2.5x that I've had for a couple of years. The 1.5x I bought from you may replace it, or I may put it on a 'hog & bear' rifle I've been thinking about (.458x2" on a Savage short-action).

CraigPThanks to everyone who responded to my questions. I just bought a set of dies for the Capstick and am planning on building one in the near future. If anyone would like to e-mail some of their load data I would really appreciate it. Again, thanks to everyone who responded.

Check back in this or the Reloading section in the near future. That 470 Capstick that John Ricks is working on is mine. I will be trying out lots of different combos when I get it. According to Quickload, Varget looks promising as do most powders that are suitable for the 416 Rem or 458 Lott. Varget also works great in my 416 Rem.

500grainsI like 84 to 86 grains of IMR 4064 behind a 500 grain Woodleigh, Trophy Bonded Sledgehammer or GS Custom solid. F215 primers. But, I plan to re-do my load development and try out the Bridger Bullets nose styles #3 and #4.
