Near Alpha mount on a 375 M70

The problem with any bridge mount like the Near is that it interferes with rapid reloading the magazine, not a desirable feature for a dangerous game rifle, which the .375 Model 70 certainly is.

I like the looks of this kind of mount.

A mate of mine who posts on AR as Blair 338RUM has them.

One thing about them, I am 99% sure they are alloy.

But like their cross slot mounts, they are beautifully made. On a Denmark run forum for Weatherby (but mainly American posters) there are heaps of blokes use them.

You will see they use Mark vs a lot in their photos. I am only guessing but I think they might do that because the mounts are made to look better with that big Wby bolt and bolt shroud.

I am sure Blair said his were alloy. However, I think that might have been based on heavy they felt and magnet would not stick. But magnet won't stick to the stainless found on the kitchen sink etc.

They also might have changed as Blair got his sometime ago. Maybe a couple of years or more.

Best bet is to phone them.

I believe they do enhance accuracy due to acting as a stiffening rib of sorts.

I have had the issue with a slow(er) reload.

I have one on one of my.378 Weatherby Mag and I really love it. Fits great and helps the scope hold zero under recoil( no break)!

Bridge mounts were all the rage years ago.

In fact I think that is why Weatherby had his action take bridge mounts for Rem 700. Although the Mark V gets the long magazine because they can machine out much of the action since in the locked position the lugs are at 12 O'clock and 4 and 8 O'clock. If you did to a Rem 700 what Wby does there would be no locking recess left for the bottom lug.

Way back then Australia's two main scope mount makers only made bridge mounts.

If yours is a Jap or German 378 with the barrel like a straw then that will test the mounts

No muzzle brake in those days.

Is that a real late Jap one. The Number 3 which is on the 416 and Accumark and USA 378....The Jap had what Wby called a Modified Number 2, just a touch larger than the 26" barrels from 257 to 340.

Number 3 is also on the 30-378 Synthetic.

So I am just wondering if Wby switched to the Number 3 sometime before they moved back to Made in USA.

I bought mine when Near first starting making them.

It is alloy and I called Richard at Near and he confirmed that the machining costs for steel would be too much to allow it it to be saleable.

I have used the old Redfields and Leupolds and they are pretty close to the same design except from about 70 or more years ago, and they have to be modified to QD design...I still have a few of them. Two of them are on my Savage 99s, they also have a peep option, and I have several of those, they have to be d&T on the rear of the base, and they fold down..

I have been told by Jack Belk, that this design loses 20% of its accuracy after you install the scope several times (wear), but I can't tell that on mine, they still work????

The design is not altogether new it appears, but more of an improvement of the old, and your system is more streamlined for sure, and has additional features such as QD..

This Near mount is machined out of a single piece of metal, the ring bottoms are integral with the base. There is no quarter turn rotary dovetail, no clamping screws, nothing even resembling quick detachability. What Redfield pattern base is like that?

I am a traditionalist and see no real advantage to change on a larger bore rifle. That said I do like the simplicity of a good synthetic stock. ;-)

I have NightForce Picatinny rails on all three of my Win Mod 70s. So far I don't have major problems reloading, but I have practiced..... a lot! Never practiced after wounding any DG though. That could be a game changer.
