Brian564Railed type scop on big bore rifles?
Would this scope mounting system work reliably on a heavy recoiling rifle, 458 win mag for example?
What are the pros and cons of this system versus the regular ring mounting? Thanks.

eagle27It's a one-of for a start as you could not just swap any old scope over without using the same mounting system. I would consider the total friction area and compare it with the friction area of a set of rings. It is not unknown with some rings that the scope suffers slippage in them, one reason I like the original Weaver style rings with the steel band over the scope, even with the single side clamp screws just starting to bite in their threads you cannot slip or roll the scope.
The three clamping blocks in the pictured mounting base look to have less friction (clamping) area than a set of rings would. I could well be wrong on this, would be good to be able to measure and calculate out.
May be I am old fashioned, but I refuse to use any of the new contraptions available right now.
From scope mounts to silly rifle actions.

Please give me examples of the new silly actions

The s&b convex rail pictured has been reported to give way under recoil of .374h&h. The Swarovski rail with its multiple teeth is a better prospect for heavy hitters - from my experience the screws attaching the base to the rifle will shake loose before the scope shakes loose from he base.
Agree on the Swarovski rail mounts. It's like a rack and pinion gear set-up. I can't see it shifting and the one I had on a .416 Rigby never moved.
