5010 powder in a 416 Rigby????
Just wondering if 5010 is usuable in a 416 Rigby? I have a bunch of it on hand and would like to use it in the 416 if possible. I know it won't give the best velocity....but will it work for practice loads? Cast bullet loads?

Thanks

It will go bang but expect very low velocity.-Rob

What Rob said. I have used it in my .500 A-Sq and it leaves quite a bit of unburned powder in the bore.

Some of the cast bullet guys are using it with a few grains of faster powder as a "kicker" to get a more complete burn..........I seem to remember them using 3 or 4 grains of 4198 in the case first and then the case filled with 5010 for a compressed load. The compressed load (and using stick powder for the kicker) keeps the faster powder from migrating into the 5010 so it remains against the primer and burns first.......

Not saying it's safe or a good idea........

I have done it, works ok and the velocity isn't as low as you would think; it makes a good 'cheap' practice load. I don't have the data with me here at work but I will dig it out tonight. Think I settled on 110 grs behind a 400 gr. bullet with F215 primer. Velocity was around 2200 I believe. I will check my data and report back. The rifle was a Ruger M77.

Checked my data last night: 400 gr Hornady sp., 110 IMR 5010, F215, Norma brass, 3.750 o.a.l. Vel(avg of 10)=2291 fps, 1st 5 went into 0.98", 2nd 5 into 1.51" at 100y. from my M77. Since this was surplus powder I would take all the usual precautions in working up a load. You do get a bit of unburned powder. Hope this helps.

Could one of you "chrony" guys check this out ? 90.3gr IMR 4350, Fed 215 Primer and Norma brass. It's the next to max load in the Hornady book and it's suppose to match factory velocities out of a 24"barrel. jorge
