458 Win Mag load data for cast bullets? ? ?
I have a Browning bolt gun in 458 Win Mag and have been shooting jacketed bullets in it for several years. I have some 500 grain 458 Cast bullets that I bought several years ago for an unrelated project. I would like to load up some of the 500 gr. cast bullets for my 458 Win Mag. However, I have been unable to find loading data for such a combination.

If anyone has cast bullet load data or a source for such data, please let me know.

Thanks in advance

Lyman Cast Bullet Handbook #3 list loads for 482gr. and 552 gr. cast boolits....I don't have a scanner so I can't send that page to you...

I shoot the 485gr Lyman GC as fast as I can - but a non-gas-checked bullet shouldn't be shot that fast. What do you have? I assume you'll size to groove diameter or that +.002". I'm using a Ruger #1 in .458WM which has THE ideal taper into the rifling for cast - very gentle.

Looking at load data from previous years - same as the Lyman #3 cast bullet handbook - top load of 68gr of 4064 drives the 482/485gr GC bullet at 2060fps from Ruger #1 24" bbl. Obviously, work up to it. Compressed load.

Bullet diameter is the trick with cast in the .458 - it's got to be a tad over groove diameter otherwise accuracy is not good.

Ken Waters has what he says is an accurate load with a 502gr from a Saeco-Darr mould. Uses IMR3031 for a velocity of 1610fps out of a Mdl 70 with 22 inch barrel. Oh, charge is 52gr according to Ken Water's "Pet Loads."

I am very sure a fast powder lile N110 or Blue Dot would give a very nice reduced load for hog and deer. The case is after all like a VERY long .45 LC.

I used QuickLoad to develop similar loads for other calibers from .222 to 9.3x74 R, results were as predicted.

Here's a mild load I've gotten excellent results with:
500gn cast bullet / 50.0 gn. IMR 4895 / WLRM primer. The bullets are cast from an NEI mold, 30:1 Pb/Sn lubed with NRA alox. BBl length 21".
Es=16, Mv=1400 fps. Energy a bit over 2100 ft-lbs. Out of my rifle, from a rest, this load consistently shoots cloverleaf groups with all holes touching @ 50 yds. Might do a little better if I had a scope.
Hope this helps...
Cheers,
Don

So long as it's a gas checked bullet with a good lube, the win mag can't push a 500 gr fast enough to worry about leading. Just use your jacketed bullet data. I've used Varget in my 458 Lott and it works quite well.
