SAFARIKID.458WM USERS with 300-350 grain bullets??
Any of you shooting the lighter 300s or 350s?
I want to use them for non African game and Hogs...Just don't need 450-500s for that!
I want them to be maxed out of course or else I would use a 45/70...
I'm thinking 2500fps + and in the shorter barrels I prefer!
Also not a handloader so any factory rounds available?
Thanks Gents!!

degoinsHornady did have a 350 grain load for .458 win mag at one time. Good luck finding any now though.....even if they still offer that one.

drewhenrytnt258gr CEB SOCOM bullet with as much RL7 as you can get in the case gives a touch over 2700. AA1680 or CFE BLK may give you more velocity.

buckeyeshooterI have used the 350 grain Barnes X at 2150 fps for moose. Worked great.

MARK H. YOUNGWith the old 350 X and IMR 4198 I got 2500 fps + out of a 20 inch barrel.

dean119I like the Speers at 2300-2400.
But other than custom makers, I dont think there are any factory loads. I would just use the standard 510g soft nose from win or rem. I think they'll work without too much destruction. But I'm thinking these have been discontinued too.

2150 fps recoils a lot less!

I use 300 gr TSX in my two Lott’s. One groups 3” at 300 yds. Used it on deer to good effect. Shoots about 6” different impact point vertically at 100 yd compared to the 500s. Guessing 2800 fps.

AtkinsonId like to know who can tell the difference on a hog or PG between the 300, 350 and 500..I can't and you might run into a mad elephant or buffalo where I hunted with a 458..
If I wanted a fast 300 gr. Id opt for a 375 or a 338..Just my story and Im sticking to it!

dougfinnI had a Ruger no.1 tropical in .458 win mag that I wanted to load and shoot as a brush gun. Didn’t work out though as the no.1 had a very long 0.600” throat that made shooting light, short bullets very hard. The most accurate load was .350 jacketed bullets launched at 2300 FPS. The recoil was too heavy to enjoy so I gave up on the project and sold the rifle.

crsheltonInteresting thread as I am going to the rifle range Saturday to see which of my handloads will regulate in my 45-70 DR with 26 inch barrels. Some Remington GREEN bOX 405 grainers SHOT A 2 INCH GROUP AT 50 YARDS, but they were a bit slow at 1330 fps MV.
I already know that the Remington 300 grain hollow point does not regulate, but does shoot through feral hog head and body at 1600 fps.
So I have loaded NF 350 grain SS up to 2000 fps and Remington 405 grain JSP up to 1800 fps to see how the heavier bullets work. We also have a box of factory Hornady 325 at 2000 fps MV to try, so it should be a busy time.

AtkinsonTo me there is a difference in using 300 and 350 in a 45-70, than in a 458 win..Fine in the 45-70 but imo a 458 was designed for 500 gr bullets and elephant, and that 500 gr bullet in either caliber is a desivive penetrating nuckler explosion!! on rabbits to Sperm whales, and end to end on cape buffalo or American bison "with a good handload" but thats just another point of view..

crsheltonThank you Ray, but I do not intend to make my .45-70 DR and ele gun - that is the job of my 1886 45-90 .

Fury01As I’m sure you know, the problem raised by your question is the availability of factory ammo. There is lots of great load opportunities with the 458wm and the lighter bullets if you hand load and much of that data can be found on this forum and others.

crsheltonFor my thread on successful loads for my Beretta .45-70, see this thread over on THe Double Gun Forum: Hint, one good load found and working on another.

AtkinsonI think with a flat nose solid from say GS Customs, and 1800 to 2100 fps, you have enough penetration to shoot elephant or anything else..
I used the Hornady 350 gr. bullet in my 45-90 and it really was an elk round deluxe, In my 26 inch barrel, I estimated about 2000 FPS plus, that was pre chronograph days, but it sure was a killer thus I never returned to the 45-70, that was always a bit of a disapointment to me, and highly praised by the masses..

Cougarz2000fps with 350gr bullets is no great trick out of a .45-70 especially with a 26 inch barrel. So I'm not sure what your point is?

AtkinsonIn that case neither am I!!
It was pre chronograph days and guess and by gosh. I loved the bullet in the 45-90 and got the loads out of Ackleys book and velocity was a guess backk in those days or a bad or good quote out of some magazine...I do remember recoil was considerably more than the 45-70s...I shot deer and elk with that old Win. and it had a 28 or 30" factory barrel as opposed to the std. 26" a heavy beast. Im going back about 70 or more years..

I'm shooting the Hornady 350 roundnose over a minimum charge of H335 for about 2100 fps in my Browning Safari .458 Win Mag. It's a pig killer. And even in the pretty light gun, the recoil isn't bad.
