510 wells - sights
okay Folks
Richard is back from PH'ing in Tanzania, and tells me that his 416 rigby cz550 is NOT enough gun to pair with his 577 searcy...

SO, he's asking about building a 510 wells (yes, I know the a2 is the same, and dies are easier) and I've got some RFQ into pacnor and wells. Since this would be a ph's rifle and not MINE, I do not trust my skills to make it 100%. I figure wells should be able to do this perfectly, anyway, the first time.

Here's where we are right now
24" barrel, like 14 or 18 twist, heavy
lug
bluing

and then SIGHTS...
I am thinking the NECG adjust banded front sight but I am clueless on the rear. He hates the masterpiece adjustable rear and the browning safari (two of my fav's)

I am thinking about the NECG island rear, 1standing 1 foldign rear. They had been making one as a sleeve, that had an intregal lug, but that may not be required.

He likes his CZ rear and his seary rear...

any thoughts or suggestions? Links to websites would be good.

ah, alass, no peep sights need to even apply...

I do like the NECG island rear, with one standing and one folding blade.

It's easily adjustable for windage, but must be filed for elevation. I assume that when your friend says he hates the NECG adjustable rear, he's talking about the one that is adjustable for elevation too. I don't like that one either.

My gunsmith at AHR spruced up my NECG island rear sight with a gold center line.

Jeffe:
I was looking through BROWNELLS adn found a
"Dakota Express Sight and Base" on page 276, in Catalog 56. This seems a very sturdy set up with a single blade rear sight. Just thought you could look into it as it has no moving parts...

jeffe - this rear sight you mention is something I am looking for, a band around the barrel with a recoil lug plus a simple sight configuration on top - do you know where I can obtain one of these? thanks - kmule

KM,
John Ricks (i think) posted pics of a NECG island/barrel lug sleeve, that, or Steve did...

might search for NECG or New and island and band?

John?

Contact Dan Pedersen at Fred Wells place, see if he has a pic of a 510 with the necg rear skeleton sight, blade front ,both bases were intergral,it has a Mcmillan stock,550cz action,I added long bolt handle and checkered saftey and bolt release. it has mercury reducers in the butt.At the time my son was 13 and 110lbs ,but could shoot this rifle very well.It allso had an integral muzz. break that could not be heard around the world and reduced the climb of the muzzle very well.Best setup i have seen for the $$$.

Kent in IA
I would recommend a faster twist. Something like 1:10 or 1:12. I built my 500 Jeffery with a 1:10 twist. Supposed to provide better penetration because the bullet is better stabilized in the animal from the faster twist. Don't know if that is true or not, but it won't hurt either.

I like a ghost ring peep on the rear bridge myself. Leave the barrel naked except for the front sight.

Kent,
1x10 is overspin, and might help with that,, but it will also DECREASE accuracy in lighter weight bullets. This is going to be designed to run a 570 barnes XLC at 2300, which calls for a 1 in 30, and we'll go 1 in 18.

he hates ghost/peep sights...

Looking like a dakota/london gun/NECG rear.

Going to have Dan do the work.

Jeffe:

As an aside, but related to a DGR rear sight. Your friend might want to consider a gold or ivory triangle inlayed into the fixed rear sight after it is sighted in. It quickly pulls the eye to where it needs to be. The Brit gunmakers learned this lesson a long time ago.

Gold is probably cheaper than the ivory. Higher material cost, but a lot less labor.
