Strawman4192.5x Leupold on a Ruger No. 1 - Front Sight Problem?
I broke down and bought a .458 Lott No. 1 in stainless/laminate. I get it on Monday. I want to mount a 2.5 fixed Leupold on it but I was looking around and some complained that the front sight is in the scope picture. Do any of you guys have this problem and how distracting is it?
My Ruger alaskan will show the front sight if I dial the power down to two. But it does not mess with the crosshairs.
I want to use the Ruger rings that are coming with it, but I know I could probably just buy taller rings.
Any insight is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I have the identical set up as you describe and yes, you can see the front sight, but it is barely visible and is not a problem to me. Appears to be very gray, small "bump" at 6 o'clock position. Scope/eye alignment for me is just right with the std. factory rings and not sure I would want my cheek/face any higher due to the somewhat stout recoil in the rifle. Those NO.1 Ruger's in 458Lott are a handfull and not wanting to alter the rifle, used Ruger stamped(Galco mfg.) velcro flap leather butt pad. Made a lot of difference in felt recoil to me.

GeorgeSRegardless of the rifle used, I believe you will find it easy to ignore the front sight while concentrating on your sight picture.
Don't sweat it until you try it.

The last two new #1's I bought came with "tall rings"..

jkingrphI put the 2.5x Leupold scout scopes on my two tropicals and the little 1-a 7x57 in i think the Talley qd mounts. They must be a little higher because I do not notice the front sight. I do like the extra eye relief especially on the harder recoiling rifles.

SnowwolfeIt the front sight is an issue have it removed

Michael RobinsonI agree with George.
This is too much ado about too little.
Through a low power scope, the ghost of the front sight is visible.
But only if you focus on the sight, rather than your target, which you will not do.
Bottom line is that it's easily and naturally ignored.

BaxterBThis, like many problems is only a problem when you are in your office shouldering your rifle at a blank wall. When you get to the range or hunting and your focus is on game or a target, you will never see it.
I have newer Mod 70 I had George Hoenig put sights on and I see it through the 4x Leupold but it's not distracting at all and I do hot notice it at all when on a real target.

jamesicusThe barrel front sight of my CZ Lott can be plainly seen at 6 o'clock when I use my scope. It doesn't bother or distract me at all as I maintain absolute concentration on the cross hairs/target.

Strawman419Thanks guys! This is what I love about this forum, I ask a question and there is first hand knowledge. I am going to buy the scope. I was just hesitant to shell out the money before I asked. Once I get it all set up, I will have to post some pics. Take care and thanks again! (if anyone has a scanned copy of lott load data from the hornady book, feel free to pm me, I have some other data and I didn't want to shell out the money for just the one set of data)
Thanks again!

Dr. LouHappens when using low power scopes on rifles with front sights. You won't even notice it.

mwm464Just got done shooting the identical set up today:
- Ruger #1 Stainless / Laminate
- 458 Lott
- Limbsaver Recoil Pad
(Ruger #1 factory fit perfect)
- Warne QD Med Height Mounts
- Leupold 2.5x Fixed
(Butlercreek #1 Occular & #1 Objective Caps)
- Ruger "Alaskan" Fixed Rear Sight
- NECG Red Fiber Optic Front
(Lowest Height Available)
Open sights hit perfect @ 25yds w/ Hornady DGS 500Gr. Sighted the scope in at 100yds.
Recoil is at my limits for accuracy with the scope on. With the scope off (yes it actually makes a big difference) it "scrambles" my brain after several shots, even with an extra "sissy" pad. Less shove, but more pain than the 585AHR & 600 OK I've shot.
I can see the front sight in the very bottom of the scope (as is the case w/ most correctly mounted low power scopes & front sights), but its not noticed when shooting & definitely not any distraction to me.
I'm very happy so far w/ her, a Lott of bang for the buck!!!
