sactollerFinally, got my .404!
Though not the one that I started with a GS 3 years ago, but a near mint Ruger #1....So at least I get to use up all the brass and boolits I have had sitting around for three years!

AtkinsonGreat caliber, been shooting it for many many years, and its my all time favorite..IMR is the only powder for the caliber as it gets the highest velocity with the least pressure..RL-15 is a distant second choice.
95 grs. is max in most 404s with with the 400 gr. bullets and you can get 2653 FPS in that long tube, but it comes with a big dose of recoil..
My favorite hunting load is 93 grs. with a 400 gr. bullet for 2400 FPS plus.
Hope this prints up, having a rain shower and two drops kill these country lines.

These must be rare I have only come across couple in well over a decade. I passed on one couple of years ago simply because I do not need cannon like that. Ruger 1 Tropical is very nice rifle.

sactollerYep, they didn't make many, I passed on one a couple of years ago, was not going to pass on this one.

OldsargeTalk about pith helmet central! A .404 in a modern steel Farquarson is about as Spirit of Khaki as it gets. You simply
must take that baby to Africa, must, must, must! Yanno, if I had been the one to buy it I'd forgotten all my oaths of never flying there again. All the pain and discomfort of 24 hours in coach would be well worth the experience. Really, old chap, it simply has to see Tanzania, don'tcherknow . . .

RIPCongratulations!
If I ever had the chance at a Ruger No. 1 in 404 Jeffery it would be mine.
They advertized it in the RSM originally, did they ever make it? No?
Hodgdon's Varget Extreme is the proper powder.
It will have the least temperature sensitivity
and beat any IMR powder for velocity.
Sho-nuff.

sactollerWould be splendid in old Tanzania!
May just end up in Zim and Namibia in a couple of years!
Gonna have to get me a pith!

OldsargeMozambique would be another classic safari destination and such beautiful country! I could go on for hours . . .
For piths, go to tagsafari.com. They not only carry the usual mushroom tops but also the long tailed cavalry model, as well. Much more dashing! And made in Africa . . .

Thanks for the info on Varget Extreme, will have to pick up some. As far as the .404J in the RSM I know they have made at least two.
The one that I am waiting on from the GS is a Ruger M77mkII, hoping to have something soon.
