450 Ackley velocity question?
I have been shooting 400gr Swift A-frames in my 450 Ackley at 2412 ft/sec. This was checked on a friends chronograph. Does any one have a computer program that will figure a rough velocity based on a 300gr Speer Unicore and 81 grains of IMR 4198? I am working up a load to use on those "snorting whitetail does", who so deserve to meet my 450 Ackley. I will be using this gun again this season. My friends think I'm crazy, but you never know when one of those Western Oklahoma whitetails might charge you and you need that "stopping power"!
Thanks, Ghost

Timberghost,
I ran your question thru Accuload and came up with the following. The closest powder I could get to 4198 was 3031. It says with 81gr IMR 3031 the velocity from a 24" barrel should be 2710fps. Are your whitetails wearing steel armor???? LOL Hope this helps Jerry

Thanks Jerry! 2710 with a 300gr thin jacket slug should put a doe down. No armor on the deer, but I own 10 rifles .375 and up, so I need to shoot one of them at deer each year. Whitetails are the largest legal game we have here in Oklahoma and I love big bores. It's fun to walk into the quick shop with a handfull of 450 Ackley's hanging in your belt too. People give me a lot of crap over it, but when they shoot a deer with their 7mm and it runs away, I just shake my head and they say: "I know"!!! When I hit a deer, it doesn't get up.
Thanks again, Ghost
