I would use either my .416 Rigby cz or .458 lott with the practicality edge going to the lott due to bullets etc.

I like the 400 gr woodleigh pp and the 500 gr woodleigh softs and maybe some 300 gr taipans.

For my .416 I like 410 gr woodleigh's and 400 gr taipans.

Justify buying another gun??
I wasn't aware that we needed to do that. I've just been buying what looks interesting. If one 45 is good, then surely 2 is better.

I can relate to that statement, but cannot bring myself to appling it to a shotgun. I guess I just ain't a shotgun nut.

I would not select a 416 Rigby as my doall big bore. Besides I prefer the 340gr Woodleigh PP or 350 gr Speer for the Rigby. Shoots more like a 30-06 that way.

My first choice would be a 505 Gibbs, 500 Jeffery, 500 AHR, 500 A Square loaded with 535 through 600 grain pills (Soft points unless the LAW or simple common sense required solids). With any of them I am good to go to ~ 350 yards. That is plenty far for my big game hunting needs. For varmints, I would use the 300 Winnie and 200 to 220 gr Sierras.

The one I bought. The 416 Rigby. Nothing walks on earth it won't handle. I use 350 grain cast lead bullets with gas checks at about 2100fps for fun and 350 grain speers at 2400fps for everything else. If I go to Africa for buffalo I will us Hornady's 400 grain soft nose and solid bullets. My handloads will make sure they hit 1 inch high at 100 yards with the solids traveling 2400fps.

Do you base this comment on first hand experience with the 416 Rigby, or upon stories written of it in books and magazines?

I understand the 2400 fps (though I would drive a solid a tad faster perhaps), but why the 1" high @ 100 yards?

Sounds like a good rationale for buying a .458 double rifle

Right-O! I am still holding out for the mythical Bakail double in 45-70. This $899.00 I've set aside may earn enough interest for a Searcy before it happens, though.
Ass_Clown, if they ever get it made, there's your 45-90 waiting to happen.

Over .40 would be the .416 Rem. Under .40 I would go for the .375 H&H. Either one with the Barnes X bullet. I have used the X in the .375 and really like it.

I would pick my 450/400 3 1/4" British Double rifle. Its weight is 9 1/4 lbs. I have carried it on backpack bear hunts in Montana and on caribou and brown bear hunts in Alaska. I have used it for deer and pigs in Texas. I use 300 grain Hawks for deer and pigs, 400 grain Woodleigh for everything else. I have taken caribou at 85 and 150 yards with the iron sights, but if it was my only hunting rifle I would take it to JJ at Champlin Arms and have a scope fitted in QD mounts. I have shot rocks with it at 200 yards. With a scope and 300 grain bullets at 2330fps I would not be afraid to shoot deer sized game out to 300 yards with this rifle.

The 300 and 400 grain bullets hit the same place and regulate perfectly at 100 yards on paper and at 200 yards on my "200 yard rock".

AC- So what is the come-up on a .505 Gibbs shooting a 535gr pill at 2500fps at 350 yrds? What scope would you use? Obviously one with plenty of range and eye relief. I would like to see you shoot such a combo and connect. Personally I like to get a wee bit closer like 25-50 yrds from game with a 505 Gibbs and even then sometimes I miss! -Rob

I have found the 475 #2 to be adequate for anything from Lynx to Cape Buffalo. If you prefer a bolt action the 450 Rigby is actually the best 45 cal. hunting cartridge. It is considerably more powerful then the 458 Win, works at modest pressures, & feeds & extracts well. The 458 Win & 460 Weatherby are not highly regarded by most professional hunters in Africa

First off I would be using a 525 gr Woodleigh. Powder would be IMR4350, quite a lot of it. Achieving the ballisitics I quoted is quite simple with ANY of the cartridges I spoke of (505 Gibbs, 500 Jeffery, 500 AHR, 500 A Square).



Scope would most likely be either:



Leupold VarXII 1-4 (the ONE I have has held up well)

Zeiss or Swarvo, similar magnitification to the Leupold.



I would consider 350 yards a MAXIMUM LONG RANGE shot, and would much prefer yardage to be under 200.

I personally like those kinda ranges regardless of what I am shooting! However, at those kinda ranges I MUCH prefer iron sights. The reason is rather simple, frequently at those ranges things happen quickly, so I need FAST sight/target acquisition. I find irons do this FOR me much better than ANY scope (telescopic sight).
