Two Tone Rifle Question: Stainless Rifle, Matte Scope: What Rings?
Ok, I have THIS rifle:
I finally picked it up from the FFL and I'm looking to pick up a set of rings/bases. Stainless rifle...but the scope will be matte black. I like black scopes...never really got along with a silver scope on a rifle...not that there's anything wrong with that.
Anyway, do I match the rings to the rifle (ie: SS rings & bases) or do I go Matte black on the rings?
Ultimately the rifle will sport an Iron sight front and either a Talley peep or a Brockman's peep - both of which are blued I think...
Anyway, anyone got some pix of two tone rifles? Any thoughts on Rings/Bases colors?
Regards,
Robert

rnoviHmmmm, just ran out and took a fresh pic of the rifle...nuts if I'd need some kind of ring extender to make that scope fit. All of a sudden the straight tube scopes (aka, 20m) make a whole lot of sense...
And the picture really helps me get a good look at what things look like.

Robert

BuliwyfI'd go with matte black base and rings.
I have seen the silver base and black ring approach as MopaneMike suggests and it does look nice and is different.
I do however, like silver scopes and have them on varmint rifles and also on a big 7 STW.

SevensMatch the scope and get the matte rings. You mentioned you wanted to add iron sights (and don't forget a barrel band sling swivel). If you go that route you could always have the barrel and action coated in a black teflon coating. Then everything will match!
Nice choice on the scope BTW. I have the same on my 375 H&H.

LionHunterI have a 15 year old Browning A-Bolt II in SS .375H&H with a matte Leupold 1.75-6x scope. At the time the only QR base and rings I could find were the silver finish. They look fine. Note that the stock is synthetic black and perhaps that helps in the overall view.
BTW, the color has never affected the function nor accuracy of the rifle.

Rodney H.{500Jeffery}A friend of mine did his model 70 classic ss with black rings and bases with luepold silver satin scope. The combo looked good and matched the black iron sights.

foxfireBlack rings and bases
No good deed goes unpunished.
I have been stuck with a few silver scopes and rings.
Eventually I get disgusted enough to spray paint them black with Krylon.
Leupold and Bushnell alike have been beautified thusly.
A silver scope on any rifle just screams "silly."
Silly is only funny for a short while. Then it becomes just dumb.
rnovi,
Here is a setup that will work with your scope.
Mine is a Winchester M70 Classic Stainless .375 H&H
that was rechambered to .375 Weatherby,
and restocked with an HS Precision stock.
This rifle shot my smallest ever 3-shot group, using Bridger copies of Saeed's Walterhog bullet.
The bases and rings are QRW Leupold, and match the finish of the Leupold 2.5x-8x scope.
Just a little overhang of the rear base and no offset rings required:
Blued/Black rings or to be different get them colour cased hardened, I have a Savage 99 with factory colour cased lever but I colour cased the rings on black scope looks good!

idahoelk101Same set up on 3 ss m 70 rifles. Matte black rings, bases, and scope

Terry BlauwkampI vote for silver rings for contrast.

Gerryr,
It appears to me as though you're gonna require (on the front) a pair of extension rings anyway and depending your Eye Relief requirments maybe on the rear, too - Dunno!
I'm a "Free Spirit" not particularly strapped to anyone's convention.
Be yourself. SS Bases, Matte Black Bases, SS or Black rings - split the rings one SS up, Matte black down.....
.....who cares; Just Get on with It!
Have Fun.

rnoviWell, I decided on a set of Talley Extended bases and a set of low, screw rings (aka, non-detatchable). In matte black steel.
I also made it a point to order the rear base that's Talley Peep sight compatable (Haven't ordered the peep yet though).
I thought about going with the quick detatch rings, but opted against it for now. This rifle will end up as a fixed scope option for likely the next 3 years, so no real point in bothering with the quick detatch. Heck, for that matter I've never bothered to use Iron's on a rifle... But I do want the option in the end.
Thanks for the opinions guys!
Regards,
Robert

rnovi,
Good that you have gone with matte black, even if it was Talley.

The pic I showed above of the QRW allows the short scope mounting (2.5x-8x Leupold) with some rear port hangover.
If that rear QRW base is reversed, then there is no hangover, but then it requires a longer scope tube, like a 3x-9x Leupold or Zeiss, or a 1.5x-5x Leupold, etc.
I have another M70 Classic in 416 Dakota.
I used some spare Dakota M76 Talley bases on it and had to reverse the rear Talley base, to get it to fit with no overhang. However I am stuck with the longer scope on that one.
The Dakota and Winchester have the same receiver profile, but a different rear base for the Dakota M76 versus the Winchester M70.
It has to do with a clearance milling on the Dakota, which has a different bolt release.
I have some Talley Winchester bases too.
Even if they fit with no overhang, you may have to use a longer scope ... unless Talley has some extension rings ... which I do not know ...
My main purpose for using the Talleys on the Winchester was to have a rifle I could switch scopes with,
between it and the Dakota M76 I have with Talleys.
A primary scope on each rifle,
and a backup scope that could go on either,
with a minor slide-adjustment and retightening of the front ring, in Talley rings all.
In the QR thread, I showed a pic of the Talley setup on the Dakota.
Dakota did the machining on the rear base to fit the Talley peep.
That involves totally removing the "rear recoil shoulder" from the rear base
(which has little functional importance anyway) and drilling a little detent into the side of the rear Talley base
for the peep locking screw to lock into.
You could do this yourself with some files and a drill press.
When all is said and done, my only reason for going with Talley over the QRW is to get the peep.
Notice that the action, barrel, and rings and bases on the Dakota M76 are all matching "French Gray?"
I am still looking for a matching French Gray scope, though black may have to do.

The flash makes it look lighter, it is really a dark gray,
does not scream "silly" quite as loudly as a silver scope and rings do.
