Varget powder in a 416 rem?
Has anyone used varget powder in a 416 rem mag and 400 grain bullets?

vapodogThe Hornady manual shows a 78 grain charge (max) for 2350'/sec and a 400 grain bullet.
It's not the best but a fine powder for this cartridge just the same. H-380 is what I'd be trying.......90 grains (max) yields 2450!

Sambar 9.3The old ADI manual shows a max load of 88gr, with the 400gr.
The new ADI manual shows a max load of 75gr.
I wonder who found that out the hard way?

gumboot458...I think H4895 does better with the 416 Rem ... RL 15 is one of the very best powders for it ...IMR 4064 is very good also ...

Dave, we may be looking at different copies of the ADI manuals, but my older one which I've had +/- 10 years gives a max load for 2208, which I believe is what Hodgdon load as Varget, of 78 grains with 400 gr bullets, the latest one I have, 4th Edition, Nov 2004, which is still current locally anyway, is only 1 gr below this for a max load, the later manual lists start loads too, it starts at 72 grains 2208. The earlier manual listed 2209 (H4350) at 90 gr nax, the later one was 85 gr start load & 88 gr max which is listed as a compressed load.

Thanks guys, Im using RL15 right now and am working up. My last three were 79.5 at 2420 with no sign of pressure but the group is 2 1/2 inches at 100. Nosler lists max at 81 so I have a little way to go and hopefully the group will shrink. I will try Varget if the RL15 doesnt come together. With the barnes triple shock being so long I dont think I could get much over 81 grains in the case.

gumboot458......In the rem mag and the Taylor the 350 X or TSX is pretty much the heaviest needed ....I,ve never heard of anything they didn,t kill extremely well .....
