The Great .500 Nitro is not listed, so I can't vote.

CCMDoc416 Weatherby - I've taken everything from Whitetails to Kudu and would have been happy to use it for Cape buffalo or elephant.

Plenty flat shooting when the situation calls for it on non-dangerous game, plenty of power and penetration for DG.
I would have used it on Cape buffalo if I hadnt my 600OK

If we're ONLY speaking of DG (including coastal bears), then 600 Overkill, but since it is your poll and your party, I'll still go with the 416

RobgunbuilderI always vote for the largest caliber possible. The 470MBOGO would be my choice from your list. It will out class all the others and can be used at over 200yrds if needed. No flies on the 470Mbogo.-Rob

eezridrWhat ever it is, I would try and keep it below 10 lbs. I hear some folks walking +10 miles a day tracking elephants.
I believe the 11-13 lb guns would wear you down in the heat. I suspect someone else may be carrying that baggage for some hunters. Keeping the weight down may influence your decision on caliber.
Unfortunately I have never been very successful shooting game out of a truck; except pigs!
EZ
I have to pick the old standby .470, especially since there are so many good bullets available in that diameter now. With Swift, Woodleigh, and Hornady all making some good ones.
416 Rigby or Remington Magnum

thats because the poll is poorly written. It should have been better stated, with examples:
28 (7x57,7mmrem, etc)
30 (300 wby, 308 )
34 (338win, 340 wby,etc)
38 (375hh, ruger etc)
40 (404,416Rigby,416xyz etc)
45 (458wm, Lott,470NE etc)
50 (505Gibbs,500NE, etc)
>50 (577NE,600NE, etc)
I believe, sadly this is what he meant. I think, then again, who knows??? What the heck is .400 I am still waiting to hear?
Could mean
450-400 3" or longer
400 H&H (old name 400/375 H&H)
400 Williams
etc
400 Purdey - though doubtful

bwanamrmTall order and a big shopping list. My personal choice would be the .416 out of the calibers listed. Pretty versatile cartridge in any of the flavors from the new Ruger to the old Rigby.

Agreed. DG? .505

dgr416After shooting my friends 470 capstick I decided that the 416 Rem mag was my limit on shooting as far as an all around Dangerous Game Rifles goes. Its good for up close stopping power and can be used at longer ranges with a good bullet.I usually can shoot it all day long 120-150 shots with reduced loads and shoot about 30-40 full power loads to boot.I just hope remington gets off its rear and makes cases for the 416 rem mag again.I was hoping the 416 Ruger would take off but I dont see it going far with only Ruger offering it.A shorter bolt throw and no belt is a plus. The 416 Rem mag suits all my needs for larger to Dangerous Game!!!

JCS271I really like my .416(Ruger), but I LOVE my .450NE. Can't believe you left it off your list!

Teat HoundNo 45/70 option??

Seriously, I voted for 458 (as in Lott), but this is based on pure speculation rather than field experience yet.
The only animal I've taken with the calibers you have listed is a feral hog, with my 375.

If I remember correctly...around the turn of the 20th century "40 caliber" covered everything from .395" diameter through .440" diameter.
Does make you wonder why the .416" was listed though unless it's supposed to only cover the 458/400 3" Nitro Express which is a .400" bore/.410" groove.
Just think its poorly written.
Edit Added: Though it could reference the .400 Tembo which does use a .400" diameter bullet...here's a link to the website:
