Hello to all,

A few days ago, I bought my DGR: a custom 416 rigby based on a Ultramag action (CRF, winch style safety, timney trigger).
I plan to put a leupold 1,75-6X32 in QR leupold rings, but wonder which bases I need to do so.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I would suggest the QRW, rather than the QR, but each to his own.

If I remember correctly the Ultramag is a "square bridge mauser", so I think you will need custom mounts for it. Perhaps someone more knowledgeable can point to some off-the-shelf bases.

If you must build custom bases, the QRW bases will be easier and, in my opinion, stronger.

Is your receiver drilled and tapped for scope bases? If it came like that from the manufacturer, www.olyarms.com , contact them by e-mail to ask them what bases they drilled and tapped for (e.g., FN Mauser, Mauser 98 (Large ring), etc.).

If your gunsmith did it, then he should be able to tell you.

Then, go to Leupold's mount fit page, http://www.leupold.com/MountFitChart/default.asp , select the rifle that matches the mounting hole pattern along with the scope you intend to mount. You will be presented with the Leupold part numbers and descriptions.

I've had Leupold QR rings and bases on my Win. Model 70 .375H&H for four years and three DG safaris. They have withstood hundreds of rounds and thousands of miles of rough travel without ever losing zero.

They're pretty good for the price (like all Leupold products ).

I have QR'S on a Whitworth/MK X .375AI. They have been flawless for 350 rounds.

Tsturm, can you use your Whitworth's iron sights when the scope is removed with the bases still on the rifle?

There are only two reasons to have QD rings and bases on a rifle, themost important is, so a spare scope already zeroed in, can replace a broken scope in the field, without haveing to re-zero in the field, and to be able to use the iron sights in a flash! I love Leupold bases on a rifle that is a paper puncher, used near home. But they are too high , and interfere with my irons on my hunting rifles. I therefore use Warne QDs and would use Tallys as well for the same reasons I use the Warnes.

Yes!! The bases are plenty low enough for open sight use! That was the plan!!LOL

There should probably be enough metal in the bridges of that action to mill your bases right in. If there is, you couldn't go wrong cutting for Warne or Tally rings. This would be the strongest and most attractive option.

Shoot the largest caliber you can shoot well, and practice , practice, practice.

If it is a double square bridge then cut the square bridges for Talley and beware or Warne rings, they'll get you in trouble on heavy recoiling rifles...If it is a single square bridge the cut the single bridge for Talleys and have a gunsmith make a front base to drill and tap to the front ring...

Another option is the wonderful old side mounts by Griffin and Howe and a couple of others, they sure leave the receiver clean so you can see your iron sights when the scope is detached...Be careful most bases are too high to see the sights or require the iron sights to be so high as to ruin the lines of a nice rifle....

This is one area to give lots of thought if you actually use the irons like I do...I see lots of guns going to Africa that are improperly set up for various reasons.
