Indeed,Ray, You may have made a correct call as to a used market (if CZ doesn't.....) In addition to possible shattered stocks there is the feed problem, because of the one size fits all feed well continued from the earlier ZKK 602. The .505 with .640 diameter rim needs more support than the typical .027-030 remaining bolt rim shroud metal at the bolt face when opened up for the Gibbs. The Brit. Gibbs builders spliced 2 strips above and below the ejector slot in the left side of the bolt as a continuation of the left lug. Later, Mauser-Werke made Magnum bolts with this feature as an integral part of the bolt body. Usually known as a "stepped lug" Magnum. The bottom "prong" being + .078 out from the cylindrical part of the bolt aided greatly during feeding because both rt. and left side ctg rims were caught by this projection as the ctg rose up out of the well and this aligned the rim to slip under the extractor.
When there is only the thin.027" rim shroud the ctgs collide with the thin edge which acts like a chisel often causing the ctg. to scoot ahead of the extractor with the result you have either a no or a push feed. A filler piece acting as an extension can be added after, The receiver feed well can be opened to the ideal geometry and probably still use a sheetmetal mag box, The set trigger can be dumped for one without all those extra parts, stock replaced and a good dependable DGR the result. Take heart! If a used market and depressed prices result from an ill thought out 550-505. it can be resurected. CZ might even have persuaded S B to make the ammo.

NitroXI'd be in for one. But prefer a Jeffrey.
25 April 2004, 05:34
fla3006Wish they'd also consider building the 404Jeff.
Is the really the case I am getting excited if this is so...I hope know one is playing a cruel joke on me.....

I reckon cz will sell quite a few of these, if they are the same price as other cz's I want two !!
Lets start an e-mail flood to cz and get them to hurry this up if it is true !!
Apparently they have been experimenting with the .505 Gibbs for awhile. The guy was complaining about ammunition cost! Someone is taking one to Zim in August for the "field trail." I volunteered but haven't got any offers yet!
All I got out of them was 2005. Not very definite time of delivery, but it is true...they are coming.

24 April 2004, 15:39
CAPSTICKYea,it is true.I e-mailed CZ-USA the other day and asked if it was true they were going to produce a 505 Gibbs for 05 and Jason Morton's reply was "That is our intention".If you have any more questions you can e-mail him at
jason@cz-usa.com24 April 2004, 15:52
NitromanI already emailed and asked if there was a list I can get on!

24 April 2004, 16:20
CAPSTICKLet me know if you get a reply.
24 April 2004, 17:27
interboatI talked with Jason at CZ today and he said, yes, they are definitely going to build a 505 Gibbs.
I have just e-mailed Jason and started nagging

24 April 2004, 19:30
OldsargeJason assured me that they
were going to start them up but weren't sure whether the date would be late this year or early in the next. Oooooooo and here I am trying to get
rid of guns instead of buying new ones . . . Aaauuurrgh!!
24 April 2004, 22:29
cr500Sign me up for one now.

TongoWho currently makes ammo?
PC,
If CZ does release a 505Gibbs in 2005, I'm in as well. When the time is right maybe us Aussie boys should think about a group order on dies and cases and see if we can save some. Seems like we've got a few months to wait either way.

GrandpasezI they want to sell huge numbers of the big and hairy
they should make 550 Magnums, easier to do, plenty of brass,
no pissin around, two more cases in the box; just big, straight power.Ed.
25 April 2004, 13:29
AtkinsonWe'll see if they stay in the wood?, that is going to be a problem with production line rifles...Knowing CZ I doubt if they have even considered that..guess time will tell. I sure wish they would have made a 404, it would have sold better IMO...On the up side there will be a lot of 505s on the used market very quickly I suspect...
No worries Con, let us know when we should get started and we can work something out.The suspense is killing me I will be deeply traumatised if there just pretending

25 April 2004, 14:48
Mike375I think if the 505 comes out in the CZ then you might see brass from someone like Norma. I would imagine that the CZ and 505 will be similar to the setup that has developed with the 416 Rigby.

djpaintlesWhen stocking up on 505 Brass and bullets don't forget the Tylenol. 505's can be plain Nasty to shoot!......DJ
25 April 2004, 20:19
okie johnI'll go for a 505, though I really want to know where ammo will come from. Everyone thought Federal was crazy to load for 416 and 470 and look at what happened. A man's gotta have a dream, I guess. Okie John
Mike,
I agree, I can't see CZ making rifles if no ammunition supplier comes to the party, what would be the point? Where did the CZ in 505 Gibbs rumour start anyway?
Cheers...

What a great line up ...
a .303,
a .404, and
a .505.
I've been thinking about that line up for a while.
Though the claim has been made that there is nothing new under the cartridge sun, there are a lot of competitors for the .303 and .404 slots, but few in the .505 group.
The most common competitor to the Gibbs is the .500 Jeffery, which suffers from dubious cartridge dimension standardization. If one was to try to make a rifle with a profit margin, it would seem to be clearly the .505 as opposed to the Jeffery.
If one wants to live in the past(!), the Gibbs has as much nostaglia as the Jeffery.
What is the point to all of this? I've forgotten.

Dago RedDoesn't Kynoch make ammo for the 505 gibbs? 67 for a box of 5, that isn't bad when you think about it. :-)

Con,
This isn't a rumor. It is the word from CZ-USA. Either late this year or early next.
26 April 2004, 05:07
TGetzenIf they build it, I will buy it.
I never in my wildest dreams as a kid guessed I would be able to buy rifles in the calibers I read about in old safari stories, newly made! What about the 500 Jeffery in the CZ? Was that idea replaced by the 505 Gibbs? I would like to see a 404 Jeffery in this rifle also.

recoilpadI hope CZ does a better job on this rifle than the CZ 550 American in .458 Lott. All CZ did was convert a .458 Win Mag to a .458 Lott. They stamped out "Win. Mag" on the barrel and stamped "Lott" above it. It looks cheesy but for the price I guess I can't complain.
26 April 2004, 06:35
jeffeossoWill,
I am certain that if cz choose to make it in 500 jeffery, they could/would take a hard look at "all" (3three?) makers of loaded ammo, and require there rifle to fire the largest/closest to saami.
This would be muck like the 7.62x51 vs 308 winchester.... the cz's would make more in 1 year than ever had been produced by the classic makers... and would be the defacto standard for what a 500 jeffery chamber IS.
I don't like the limited choices in .505" bullets, then again, I am one of those "freaks" than can and does actually shoot a 500 jeffery quite a bit. Yep, I can shoot it from the bench.... makes shooting it offhand feel like a 458win...
jeffe
I think you nailed it. Where else can you buy a Lott for less than $700.
Anybody dissatisfied with the Win. Mag. XXX'ed out, I'll take them, for free.

In a few years they'll be collectors items as the "transitional model."

jeffeossowhich again says "bring it out in 500 jeffery, and avoid the problems with the huge 505"
heh

Turf wars!
Now the rebated rim on the Jeffery is no problem, eh?

SocratesI would love a 50 caliber, affordable rifle, and likewise, same diameter, as a pistol.
If that doesn't happen, the 458 Lott is JUST fine.
