500grainsI could be wrong, but I think that is a 500 BPE, not a 500 NE. Last year, Cape Outfitters had a 500 BPE made by H&H for $2750, all in good working order and a good shooter.
The BPE rounds do not even come close to the NE rounds ballistically, so their value is way down. The 500 BPE would be a good zebra and lion gun, but with a 340 grain lead bullet at 1600 fps, it probably would not cut a lot of mustard on buffalo.

GeorgeSThe Damascus barrels are the big clue that it's a BPE.
Interesting, but not worth $8k (especially with only 10% case coloring).

<Rusty>John,
The Kreighoff 500/416 at $7,600 is a much better deal!

JohnTheGreekJust got an email from the seller. It is, unfortunately a BPE rifle. Not worth $8K for what is really a fancy plains game rifle . . . no matter who owned it before. too bad.

MacD37This is a beautiful rifle, but I agree with the others, a Kreieghoff, or Searcy for the same price is a far better deal!
However this rifle at around $3K is a real buy, considering it's condition, and accompanying case, and tools. The factory letter identifying the Marahja as the origenal owner is what makes it worth the $3K. This rifle was most likely ordered for Tiger hunting from a howda, and probably has some history in that use! It would make a very good North American hunting rifle, or for Rusty's double rifle shoots in Houston! A very nice collector's item that can be shot, and enjoyed! Not worth $8K, however!

Brian MNice gun,but worth nowhere near $8K,like the others have said.$3K-$4K would be a good buy on it.
I see a lot of BPE doubles in good shooting condition for $3K-$5K.Have considered getting one to play with-one would probibly make a heck of a black bear gun, espically something like a 577 BPE.

JohnTheGreekBrianM,
I too have thought a .577 BPE would be damn neat. Like the rifle that prompted this thread, however, I could never really figure out what the hell I would do with. Trajectory kinda sucks for plains game and not enough punch for dangerous game. I guess bears in the thick stuff would be a good use for such a rifle.
