Barrel Contour, too heavy?
You guys that carry bigbores, here is a question. a Douglas barrel no. 7 contour in .416, would that make a rifle too heavy? say on a mauser action with a wood stock, open sighted?

I think that the barrel weight is just under 7lbs.!

way too heavy...

try number 5 or 6... I think a nubmer 7 is pretty good for a 585

You pack that one all day in 100 degree plus and you will come home gilflurted and stringhaultered...

A no. 4 is the best bet for a big bore to 416 or even 458......IMO.

thanks, that's what I thought. I saw one for sale for a good price but figured it was too heavy.

Dago Red,

My rule of thumb is bore diameter plus .275 to .300" or so.

So a .375 works out as .650 to .675. a .416 would balance nicely at .700 to .725.

A 458 some where between .725 and .750.

If you build all your rifles that way, with the same length barrels, they will all weigh in the same. (plus or minus the action, ring and scope weight)
