Cartridges for Doubles

Here are the rimmed cases for Double Rifles. Take your pick. [Big Grin]

700 H&H, 600 NE, 577 NE 3",577 NE 2 3/4", 500 NE, 475 #2, 475 NE, 476 WR, 470 NE, 465 H&H, 450#2, 450 3 1/4, 400 3", .375 Flgd, 9.3 x 74R, 360#2.

Make mine a 450/400 3 inch! Best all around chambering for a double. Just my opine!

After that, a 500/416, soon to be a lot of peoples favorite. Followed by the 475#2, one Hell of a Killer and the venerable, been there done that, 470.

500 NE x 3" please.

600 NE if the gun weighs at least 16 pounds and someone else carries it for me.

I've never owned a double but I'd like to have a 450-400 and a 500 NE, and maybe a 450 No.2 or a 577.

Have no need for anything bigger than a 500 NE, and my choice would be, if I could have only one (perish the thought) a 450/400NE 3". It is sort of like the old 375 H&H in a bolt rifle, will do on the big stuff, and is more versitile for the small stuff! Is light enough to carry all day in the African heat,and handles like an extention of ones body. It has a rep for deep penetration, and shootability in close quarters, where repeat shots might be needed quickly!

If I could have two, then the choice would be a 450NE #2, and a 375 flanged magnum, or a 9.3X74R. [Confused]

When there is something about Africa guns that I don't know from my own experience, I am in the habit of reading John (Pondoro) Taylor's African Rifles and Cartridges and following his advice.

I don't "do " double rifles, so I would follow Pondoro here and go for:

.400 and .465.

The KISS principle dictates that I stick to the 470 NE only. It will do anything a double rifle should do.

This also makes for shorter sailing trips on the double rifle ship of fools. Less tedious that way. [Wink]

I really prefer bolt action trash anyway.

I'll stick with Sweet Thang, my old 450-400-3" she has always served me well...

If I ever slip and sell her or she gets robbed or run over by a train, then I will get Butch Searcy to make me one of the new 500/416's....I say if I sell her because knowing my whore like nature, someday someone will catch me in a weak, stupid moment and I will probably sell her, but I take every precaution to not get her in a position for selling because as Belk or Brockmon will tell you, I am a true gun whore, I'd sell my left nut if the price was right, Lord I hate that weakness, but nobodys perfect...

I would opt for a 450 rigby and then a 9,3X74r depending on the type of game. The 450 is a real classic that I really like.

I see very little use with anything above the 470. As Atkinson mentioned the 500/416 is very nice too.
