Update on 700 grain .458 bullet

Ya'll,
We have suffered a setback in the production of the 700 grain cast .458 bullet.It seems that the new owner of NEI bailed and NEI is now back to being out of business.

Wayne and I are currently trying to find a custom mold maker,who can cut us a mold.I have found a place that might be able to do it.Wayne is going to contact them and we'll go from there.

I'll keep you all informed as to the goings-on.

There are LOTS of custom mold makers out there. Especially for the .45's. Steve Brooks in one of the best. But a 700 gr bullet, whatever for? You might consider an adjustable mold so you can dial this back a bit. For that, I would guess that Hoch would be a good choice. But Brooks would be where I would start otherwise.

700 gr? I missed guess I missed the WHY? part of this.

What is your twist?

We're working on it,as I said.Alot of the custom mold makers,didn't even want to try it,even though we have the dimensions.

David James,who posts here,shoots them out of a 45/120 3 1/4 inch with standard twist and they shoot scarry accurate out of his,even at 300 yards.I plan on shooting them out of a 45/120 and a 458 Winchester Magnum.

Brian, I don't live in your world so I don't know what "standard" twist is. In my world, for a .45 it is 18 inches. This for a 550 gr bullet works beautifully out to 1000 yds. Recently, there is some interest in 16 twist for the .45, but only a few have gone that way.

I may be able to make 700 gr bullets as I have an adjustable core mold which I use to generate the cores I that I swage. But, I don't see the reason myself.

If a 700 floats your boat, great, but as I understand you, it is a solution in search of a problem esp. with respect to hunting anything less than whales. I was thinking that you had something particular in mind so that's why I asked.

I'm pretty sure he said 1-18.

You seem to be trying to get at something here,for some reason.When was "why" ever a question when it came to guns?

"Why" use 700s?Because they'd be fun to shoot at around 1,000 FPS.Because they'd punch through most anything in North America,at any angle,within 150 yards.They're cheap.They make interesting conversation.They allow us to shoot a very heavy bullet for a very low price.

Maybe the fine folks here and on other boards who have signed up for over 5,000 bullets,can answer your question.

Brent,mine is set up with the 1-18 twist,green mountain 34" heavy, the bullet, and the early loads I got out of the "Black Powder Hunting Mag"
As I remember the article was the 45-120 Weatherby
,the mould came from NEI,and it was just a way to play with some thing out of the norm, the mould was set up for the 460 at 650 grains I think, the one I have is mis-marked,by monkeying with the lead pot we were able to get them up too 700/ 715 grains just like the article said..My best load to date is 112 grains ffg Swiss over powder wad,grease cokie at base, no compression needed at this time, the bullet is set up for a gas check but i don't use one.Didn't get to hunt last year but in 01 we took fifteen hogs and three deer with it for grins and giggles.

Hey, that impressed me. I didn't think a 700 would stabilize in an 18 twist. Learn something every day. Personally, I like about 510-525 grn in a paper patched flatnose over 100 gr of Swiss fg.
