Grains is right on. That is usually the price range that I have been witness to. I got my first one for 600 bucks and it was in really nice shape. Nice rifles that can be massaged into really nice rifles!

Blue book states $465. He is very attached to it and decided he didn't really want to sell it after all. I offered him $550 and he declined.

But a little more $$ might persuade him.

If it is in fine condition and carries the "old" english cheek and not the newer stock you might want to go to $700. I would as those rifles are very well made. Mine is an excellent shooter as well. I bought a 458 on the same action recently for $600- not bragging but it was a super deal at that price. I recently grabbed a 458 WM Whitworth for $650 so In my opinion only $550 is too low especially if he really likes it.
They will only go up in value and the book doesn't take into account the market value. You do need to check out how well it is bedded and how smooth the bolt throw is. My first 458 WM bound up a little with full house loads and that is no good on a DG rifle.

IMO if you offered $550 you did about as much as I'd have gone.....
They're a fine rifle and worth more but I think a gun show this winter will turn up a couple at this price.

IMO they are that...a true mauser. I wouldn't look poorly about them.

By gosh I listened to some others on the self locking extractor, and I was lead astray.

I went and dug my Whitworth Express and Mark X Interarms rifles out of the back of the gun safe and got out the magnifying glass.

THEY DO INDEED HAVE A SELF-LOCKING EXTRACTOR.

However, they have been modified to snap over a pushfed cartridge loaded directly into the chamber. That is all, and I think that is a good thing.

I am now much happier with my Yugoslavian Mausers, and amazed I was so ignorant.

I still think the .375 H&H length ones opened to the front are butchered, but the standard length ones (30-06 or .458 WinMag with 3.34" box and full length feed ramp uncut) are fine.

Adding the Mauser flag or Winchester wing safety instead of the side safety makes them good as it gets, but I can tolerate the side safety just fine: I just don't use it, as I leave the bolt handle turned up when there is a round in the chamber during the sneak, getting ready to shoot. Otherwise I keep the chamber empty and the side safety pushed forward.

I would like to have Mauser flags or Winchester wings on all my Mausers, and I am half way there.

The Whitworth is a True Mauser regarding controlled round feeding and extracting.

The Yugos are a decent action , but they deleted the full "C" ring of the original Mausers and have an inner "H" ring instead , like the FN s .

Yes mine has been modified as well. Allows cartridges to be directly pushed into the chamber and extracted.

I want to thank everyone for the information. The sale did go through and I picked up a Yugo Mauser 48a, and a sporterized Springfield 03A3 (Remington) in the deal to boot.

Almost everything I had owned before has been a Remington 700 action, so I guess I'm going play with new actions.

Wish you guys would tell me where you are finding original MKX Whitworths for $500-550. The last one I saw was $685 and I would call it 75-80%. The last one I saw at 99% went for $885 in less than a week. If you have or find one I would be happy to make you a profit. LOL

Now for the next question.

This gun has a one piece Redfield base on it.
I would like to got to a two piece weaver style and probably QRW rings so I can use the express sights if needed or if I feel like it.

Which bases Weaver, Leupold, Warne, Talley would be low enough to use the express sights?

I would like to go with steel for strength.

Warne QD and Brownells has them and I love them on mine, IMO you have a fine rifle.

I have the talley rings and bases and they allow full use of the express iron sights. Return to zero when I detach the scope is very good. Bob

You may find that you are so happy with that new Whitworth that you begin to start shedding Remingtons! If it shoots anything like mine you will have the best of all possible worlds, Remington accuracy with Mauser strength. I did like RIP suggests and put a LH FN style flag safety to clear the scope. Those aren't easy to find so for scope use, the M70 is the better choice though you might fit a Mauser flag with a Buhler modification on it. If it were a .458, then my recommendation would be that you put a good peep sight on it and not worry about scope access. Of course, a .375 will require a scope. Sounds like you got a good deal.

I am specifically talking about the Whitworth for these bases and rings.

The Yugo and Springfield are going to be projects down the road yet to be decided.

I think the Yugo may get converted to a 7X57 and the Springfield may stay a 30-06 with some cosmetic surgery.

Good Choices! When I ordered my Whitworth from Paul Jaeger, QD mounts were few and far between. I had Leupold fixed mounts on it and am so happy I refuse to change anything. My 6.5 has the Leupold QD mounts and they work just fine, too. None of my other rifles are scoped.
