filmit.404 jeffery bullets
Does anyone still make a 300-325 grain bullet
in .423 caliber?

Mickey1Woodleigh makes a 350 grain SP.

www.hawkbullets.comFor deer and wild pigs at velocities less than 2300fps the .025jkt. bullets work great.
For bigger game AND/OR higher velocities I recommend the .035jkt.

Copper CountryIf one wants relatively cheap bullets for practice, 44 caliber pistol bullets of 300 grains can be used if they are first drawn down from .429 to .423 in a bullet reducing die. The single die needed is not so expensive compared to the price of 404 jeffery hunting bullets and can be used in any reloading press. It is easy to do and will quickly pay for itself. Now these are not going to be dangerous game bullets, but they make cheap practice ammo that, due to the thinner jacket, blow up water filled milk jugs real nice.
CH4D can make the die as well as
RCE and
Corbin .

AtkinsonIf I am not mistaken, Barnes dropped all .423 weights except the 400 gr. BX and the 400 gr.solid...I hope I am wrong but I don't see anything else listed in a recent catalog I just got...

filmityou're right Atkinson. Barnes dropped the 350 grainer last year I believe. The reason I'm wondering about a 300 is because I would like to develop a faster load with a better trajectory for Alaska type hunting. I would stick with a 400 for Africa. Has anyone used the Hawks on big bears? I generally stick to the x-bullet when I can. I'm sure it would be possible to round up some of the discontinued 350 barnes. But I don't think that would be a lot different from the 400. Am I wrong?

AtkinsonI agree and the best design is the unspeakable, but the new Bridger Bullets are the way to go, as soon as they clear ATF....but one must test the feeding on these flat nose bullets as some guns will not feed them...albiet they should.
I suggest combineing a Woodleigh soft and a FN solid in a 404 Jefferys...
I do not have a 404 presently, a situation I am going to correct very soon...I sold my last one....
I will either buy one or make one, I decided I didn't need one, I had never been without one, and I was wrong and right......I was right that I don't need one, I have a 416 Rem, 375 H&H, 450-400....I was wrong in that I "want one", therefore I shall once again have a 404 Jefferys, my all time favorite big bore rifle.
I have these spells of cleaning out the excess in my gun cabinet, then in a state of depression over their absence I rebel against my own authority and have the joy of replacing them, ain't it a kick....Some view this as some sort of mental disorder and I have no doubt they are correct, but I shall take no pills, drink less than usual, and continue to feed this malady that brings me great pleasure....
I also love to trade guns, more than I like owning them I suspect, sometimes I trade for sake of trading, again it is a sickness that pleases my heart..It makes little difference who gets the better deal as long as both parties are happy and content with their new toys, its for the love of the game. Our ancestors traded bones, arrow heads and beads, it is a primitive past time that has brought great joy upon all who retained the genes that makes us hunt...primative though they may be, I wouldn't have it any other way.
I have the heart of a hunter, the will of a "gunnut" and the mind of a common house fly.

AtkinsonHMMMMMM!!!!! now I just may have a batch of 300 and 350 gr. discontinued BarnesX bullets for the 404 that I might part with in trade for someones 400 gr. bullets like Woodleighs or well I can't think of anyone that makes 404 other than Hawk and I'm not a Hawk fan...Swift is supposed to..or even some 375 or 416s would be OK....Make me an offer...

AtkinsonI left out my favorite 404 bullet in my above post, the great 370 gr. Northfork bullet, it will do it all.
