.404 Jeffery in a Ruger No. 1
I have a couple of questions about these. How rare or uncommon are they? What is the price they are bringing?

I have seen one listed on GunsAmerica for about $2000. Is that realistic? I have seen 3 at a local show. Last month a guy had one slightly used with dies, brass and bullets for $750. I just missed one this weekend with dies and loaded ammo for about $800, I think. Another guy had one guy for $1000 but I think $900 would have bought it.

One more question is the .404 the standard tropical model like a .375? Is a .405 win. in a no. 1 also a standard tropical model?

Why spend 2000 bucks on an old used one, when you can just buy a new one(or an action from Brownells) and have a gunsmith rebarrel it for you? You could have the rifle completed for way under 2000 bucks.

My understanding is they are the 'H' model. If you are looking for a shooter, I would spend more than $1000 or so. You can get any used #1H & have it rebarreled for close to that. If you can get dies & ammo/cases, even better. It's a great old cart. that still gets it done right.

I'm not sure of the number but Ruger #1 404s are fairly uncommon. $800 with dies, brass, ammo is a decent price.

I have seen three trade this year for $1800 ish. I'd never pay that but If I saw one for under 1k it would be coming home. In fact under $1200 is a real bargain based on what I've seen this year. I have seen claims that Ruger made 50, 60, 500. I really have no idea but I expect it was a lot closer to the 500 mark.

There were only a handful of #1s in .404 Jeffery. Could the three you saw have been .405 Winchesters instead?

George, All 3 were clearly marked .404. There is a chance that 2 of them were the same rifle, the one from last month could have been the one with the loaded ammo and dies. That would make sense. Guy probably loaded up a some shot it and them decided to sell it . I did see a .405 at the same show. That is also the tropical model isn't it? I looked at it but can'tr remember now.

George no chance of that and every claim I've seen on the numbers Ruger made were all different. Cabelas sold two this year I know of plus one locally. In either event each sale was around $1800 give or take a few bucks. I think Ruger made a regular run and another run for some special group. I'm not sure but there seem to be a lot of them floating around for a run of 50-60 guns. I've had a much harder time locating guns with runs that were higher than that, But If I could get 2k for a rifle I paid $600 for I'm certain I'd sell it as well !

Thanks, fireman and ChuckWagon. I had read that there were very few of these .404s produced, and the item was dropped by Ruger because of a lack of 'standard' chamber dimensions and ammunition specifications.

A .404 Jeffery would be far more interesting to me than a .405 Winchester, even if it was chambered in a Ruger.

If you see one for a grand BUY IT ! It will be a better investment than your 401k this year.....Plus its a lot more fun than looking at a piece of paper !

I like the sound of that! Makes the near new one sitting in my safe a little more special.

I asked one of my distributers how many orders Ruger would need to do a custom run. I was told 70 or 80. No reason AR couldn't have a run of rifles done!
