chuck375Free Float Barrel on Big Bores?
Hi anyone free float their barrels on their big bores? Pros / Cons? I'm thinking of taking my wooden stocked 500 Jeffery to Alaska and am concerned about the POI changing due to wetness even after taking all of the normal precautions (sealing the bare wood under the barrel/action, grip cap and recoil pad, and using Johnson's paste wax liberally)
Thanks,
Chuck

p dog shooterYep I do i free float most of my barrels if they don't shoot well out of the box. I glass bed the action and frist couple of inchs forward of the reciver and free float the rest.
I find them combo of bedding works very well on most rifles.

tiggertateIf it has a barrel lug, that would defeat the purpose of it. If it doesn't have an underlug, I can't see what it could hurt.

BuliwyfI'd put the .500 in a best quality fiberglass stock and solve all problems for the Alaskan hunt.

chuck375That's what I'm thinking too. I've read Rip's post on the CZ Kevlar/Synthetic stock. I'm thinking I'll just send the rifle to Harlan at the CZ Custom Shop and have him do the work. I'll use my wood stock in the lower 48 and Africa, and switch to synthetic for Alaska.
