Africa loads
Well, I finally go to the range last week and again today. Settled on a load of 83.0 gr of IMR4320 for the .458 Lott. Had six shot, 3 solids and 3 TSX's under an inch at 100 yards. I'm very pleased with that.
Today I worked on a load of 76.0 grains of R-22 with a 180 TSX for my .300 WM. Finally grouped out at 3 shots at 100 at .495"...and, I can live with that, too.
Now waiting for the 18th of September and a settlement in the SAA dispute.

458RugerNo1Sounds like you're dialed-in... Now get out in the field and do as much practice as you can from field positions until the trip!

What was the velocity for the laod?

D HunterI agree with MR Ruger above. You can not get too much range time between here and there. I just got back from Namibia and wish I had shot more before I went. Shoot and shoot and shoot some more. Wiedmanshiel.

I shoot the Barnes 450 gr. bullets. My loads average 2375 fps. Could probably get a little more velocity but, I don't feel it's necessary.
I agree completely with the practice, practice, practice policy. I'll take a lesser quality bullet in the right place over the best bullet in the wrong place, everytime. But when you can get excellent bullets to hit in the right place...bingo!!!

AtkinsonBull 1,
I shot 84 grs. of IMR-4320 with any 500 gr. bullet in my 458 Lotts and got a tad over 2366 average so I suspect he is getting a good 2300 FPS, about perfect velocity for a 500 gr. bullet...
I consider IMR-4320 the ONLY powder for the 458 Lott, based on chronographing many loads..

Have you tried H-4895? I find that I can get better velocities with less powder and avoid some of the problems with bullets moving forward from heavy compression. Maybe my better luck with H-4895 over IMR 4320 is the fact that I use 22" barrels. Much shorter then yours.
Also I prefer using the 550 gr. Woodleighs.
