My .458 Project
Hey guys, haven't posted pictures of this before so thought I would. This is the .458 Win that I have been having done for the last 9 months or so. Not sure if I am going to keep it a Win or go to a Lott. Plans for now are to have a bolt binding problem corrected, have it blued, change the comb on the stock to save my face, and have the front checkering patterns repaired so they are the right size in proportion to the stock. What do you all think about it?

Hey Jeffe, it's the same one you are giving me the good advice on over in gunsmithing, just thought since i had the pictures out there I would show the bigbore fanatics.

I don't remember seeing pics of your rifle, is it on a 1917 as well? I have another one of these actions laying around, a 1917 win like this one. Still only partially sporterized, but a very good gunsmith has said he will do the work on it. Just can't decide what to chamber it for. Not sure I need another large one, but don't want that big action to be wasted on something small. hmmmmm.........too many options

For me you have struck that elusive balance between function and beauty, art and engineering, science and religeon. It seems strange to me that folks argue about these things as if they were mutually exclusive when there are things like your rifle on the planet that tell 'em BALANCE baby, its all in the BALANCE...

Red,

Could you post a photo of the other side? I'd be interested in seeing any ejector box mods.

Also, your modified OEM bottom metal... was it "filed and forged" or "cut and welded?"

Kitchen,
I'll speack from my expereince..

the boltface and extracor, plus feeding, is about all that is required....

if you want straight bottom metal, goto www.gunpartscorp.com and get a model 30 remington bottom.. it's straight, and the holes line up correctly. 14 bucks... you'll need your old metal/floorplate/pins, etc.

Jeffe,

Thanks for reminding me about Gun Parts Corp for the M 30 bottom metal. I've checked on and off for about 6 months and they show zero inventory. Is their site current, or would I stand a better chance calling? I know in the past I've been connected to folks in the warehouse that know exactly what is on the shelf. Getting it in a reasonable time is another story, however.

BTW - Did that Remington ever have a hinged floor plate and is it wide enough to tolerate a properly designed magazine box for full length H&H cases?

Regards...
