WoodjackSakoSafari .375H&H/350Woodleigh ShortRangeThumper.
Looking at the the SakoSafari(old avL61 action) I see that it has a21" tube, Nice and handy, My idea it to set one up to run a 350 Woodleigh@about2150fps, as a short to moderate range thumper.( i am thinking in terms of 9.3x74,350Rigby, but with a heavier pill at the same sort velocity.)
I would probably load to same overall cartridge length as a std 300gn loading, cause i dont need that much powder space anyway.
What load do you recommend to get me that vel.(2150) in the 21" tube?
Also If I ran the GS Custom HV-265gn, as more of a longer range lighter game plains load, what would you load to get it to about 2600 fps?(remember,21" tube) Gs-custom has this bullet listed at 2900fps in their load data,I presume from a24" barrel. So i figure with the shorter tube, and the reduced load I should get 2600-2650 reasonably easy. Same as with the 350gn@2150 load, where I here guys are getting 2400fps in their 375s'.

PoppaWWoodjack, I don't think you will lose that much speed with the 375 H&H. Many years ago I had a Sako with the manlicher stock and I think a 20" bbl. With max loads in 250, 270 and 285 gr bullets I was within 100 fps on the published speed. My 270gr hornady load was as fast as a factory load in a 24" bbl. I used this gun for short range thumpin on bears. Worked very well. I wish I hadn't sold it.

lawndartJust pour in as much RL-15 as you can with any of those bullets, and you will be good to go.

ConI've considered doing the same thing, slowing a non-premium 350gr right down to 2150-2200fps. Powders I had in mind were AR2208 (Varget) or AR2206H (H4895). Am yet to try them though.
Cheers...
