Midnight Blue turned out very nice on my last project in an attempt to copy a rust bluing.

...it is at the smith currently for some feed work.

I have a couple that are Matte Black, most people see it as a Matte blued finish.

I tried it one time, and after some rough use it got pretty scratched up!! A good old world rust blue is still the most expensive at $300 to $350. option, but it will last several life times if done properly..

I have used KG Gunkote for the last 10 yrs.
Sand blast, wash with acetone, spray & bake.
Matt black looks & feels like a matt blue that wears better. YMMV

There is a gun finishing company in Greeneville, TN called CCR Refinishing. They put their "house black" on a 760 Remington rifle barrel and slide bars. The receiver had been rust blued. I couldn't tell the difference.

Thanks all. I think I'm going to buy one of those nice B&C synthetic stocks and just use WD-40 Specialist Long Term Corrosion Inhibtor on the metal (keep my pretty blued rife when I get back and drop it back in it's walnut stock).

Cerakote incorrectly applied is the #1 source of complaints. Not all folks do it right, and even sending it to someone 'certified' by Cerakote doesn't mean much, I'm afraid.

I agree I have used a charcoal gun coat and it looks almost identical to a shiny rust blue.

That may be right, I know it applies to any other finish I know of..Im old school, rust blue and good wood..its never let me down. The best protection Ive found is a Stainless steel, plastic stocked .338 Win that comes out when the snow is a foot deep in a late Idaho hunt..I can stick it in the snow and gut my elk without worry..
