Has anyone tried bullets of 600 grains in 458 Lott?
Is it possible to shoot the 458 Lott with bullets of 600 grains? Has anyone gone hunting bullets of that weight in that caliber?, if so, how it behaves?

Thanks,

Oscar.

I have used 550gr Woodleighs and load them for a PH friend of mine. Very accurate and according to him when used on buffalo (I haven't shot anything with them but he has) they hit extremely hard. I would be wary of anything heavier due to velocity loss, with a 600gr bullet I would guess it would be down around 2,000 fps or less.

You know, Michael458 has done some detailed testing of
the CEB BBW #13 flat point bullets and he's found that
with sectional density of .340 (like .41 cal at 400 grn or
.458 cal at 500 grn) a bullet can loose much stability in-
side the targeted beast's body. In a bolt action I'd love to
compare the.458 cal. 500 grn, 550 grn, and 600 grn bul-
lets from other brands to the CEB 450 grn flat points and
see "what we see"!

This comparison would be very interesting. Thanks for your answers, imagine the caliber 458 as well as all sizes have a weight range of ideal point, and that out of these begin to decline in performance.

Not personally, but I believe the 600gr Rhino bullets are popular for buffalo in SA
My bullet of choice though would be the Woodleigh Hydro, which I understand will be available in heavier weight sometime soon.

I shot a couple of buffalo with the 458 Lott and 550 gr. bullets at 2044 FPS (10 shot av.) and they made those bulls shutter, and they made few tracks..It is definately a killer, and penetrates like a solid it appeared..most of the bullets exited and were off to Dar Es Salaam it appeared.Smiler

I have several boxes of the .458 600 grain round nose original from Barnes. I have not loaded any however. I guess still waiting to buy the .460 Weatherby to shoot them in. All I haveis the puny .458 WM at this point.

I think the 460 Weatherby has enough gunpowder to move 600 grains with solvency but not the 458 Lott.

I've loaded plenty of 600gr bullets in my 460wby and am always surprised by the bullet drop. Loading 350, 400, 450, and 500 gr loads at 78-8000 ft-lbs will place the bullets within 1.5-2" in elevation at 50yds. But, 600gr bullet at 8000 ft-lbs will drop about 4-5" at 50yds. About 7-9" drop at 100 yds compared to the other bullets. I expect you would also experience significant bullet drop from your 458 Lott.
