Advice please, witch 50 cal Heym should I choose?
Hi all!
What are the pros and cons of the:
500 A-Square
500 Jeffery
505 Gibbs

Short question, great importance, for me at least

500grains
I think that the 500A2 has everything else beat for the following reasons:

1. brass availability (Norma)
2. brass quality (Norma, not Bertram)
3. brass cost ($35 for 20)
4. wide bullet selection (.510 as opposed to .505)
5. case capacity is just right (no need for a filler like 505 gibbs needs)
6. easy to get to feed (500 jeff has a rebated rim which can be problematic unless set up by an expert)

What more could a guy ask?

Hi Softlead,
Like the others have stated the 500 A-Square is the most sensible. You can buy brass through mast technologies(www.bellammo.com) for $170 per 100 without a headstamp of with the Weatherby stamp. This is the 378 Weatherby cylindrical brass that should only take one pass through the full length sizer die to form. The other brass solution which has been mentioned a few times is Norma brass and then stamp your barrel 460/510. The rest of your costs will be comparable with .510 bullets having a larger selection. The A-Square will feed easily if you choose the correct action and it will have enough power and recoil to keep you happy.

I'll add another choice. I know of a Heym Express bolt action 500 NE 3" for sale. There were only 40 of these made. If interested, contact me.

Softlead--

Another 500 caliber to add to the mix is the .500 AHR by American Hunting Rifles, based on the Jeffereys case without the rebated rim.

Thanks for the advice.

I will keep your thoughts of brass avalabillity in mind when I make my mind up.
The same goes for the ,510" dia bullets.
