Today I went to the range and shot some 350 grain speers and 350 grain barnes X bullets. Max loads for both were over 2500 f.p.s. with imr 4198.
I have been having a lot of fun with this rifle. I have shot 70 rounds through it (all handloads). I cant wait to hunt with it.

don't you just love that 458. fun to shoot. I have one also. custom built on 1917 action with a 26" barrel. I am presently working on loads that shoot well. I have loaded 300gr BarnesX, 300gr Sierra Hollow point, and 440gr Cast Performance hard cast lead bullets. so far accuracy is very disappointing. I am ordering 500gr Hornady round nose. hope accuracy improves due to the longer bullet being closer to the lands.
ever shoot at water filled milk jugs? way too cool. no one else at the range can do what I do with that 458.
I plan on using this rifle for just about all my hunting....deer, coyote, moose, whatever. I just love a big bore.

It is fun to shoot in a twisted sort of way. The thing kicks like a mule. Still shot 40 rounds through it though today. I am going to get a triple X pachmayr pad for it.

Gentelmen the 350 gr .458 bullets from Speer are not designed for the velocities you will get from heavy loads in a 458 Win Mag case,but are 45-70 bullets, and are ecentially varment bullets, that will blow up on contact @ anything over 2000 fps, and should not be used on deer size game. The accuracy problem you are getting, Dr. John, is most likely that the rifleing twist is proper for a 500 gr jacketed bullet, and is too fast for those light pills. Try the long 400 gr Speer lightly crimped into the back crimping grouve, and I think you will be quite happy with the results, as long as you don't push it over 2150 fps. Any thing faster than 2150 fps should use a tough bullet. The 400 gr Barnes Super Solids ( a monolithic solid) will give you real service.

I have considered the Barnes 400gr solids many times but have not commited to it yet.

I really felt that the 440gr Cast performance bullets would perform nicely since they are pretty long. but I have been told by some on this post that these lead bullets cannot be pushed too fast or will give poor accuracy. I am looking for load data which will give me slower velocity with the bullet but cannot find any. I have also heard that lead bullets are notoriously poor in the accuracy dept. and input on this?

In this they recomend the 350gr Speer for 458Win and if you check Haralds http://ulfhere.freeyellow.com/ballistics/wounding.html the Speer bullet is performing rather good/
