Mickey,
I try every now and then to let the 404 Jeffery into my heart. Maybe when I get old and infirm of mind and body, I will come to appreciate the "Lady's Rifle." While I am still virile, vigorous, and potent, I will stick with the .416 Rigby for my combination sheep and elephant rifle. The one rifle battery of the knowledgeable "world hunter" ... .416 Rigby.

Ron

I think that eventually you will come to see the error in your judgement. Soon you will become tired of carrying and shooting those overweight and awkward cannons in 416 Rigby. The four door station wagon if you will and pick up the sleek sportscar, the cartridge Rigby wanted to be but couldn't.

Over a pound lighter, 2 inches shorter, larger diameter bullet, same velocity and less felt recoil. What is their not to love?

I think it was Elmer Keith who referred to the 7mm Mag as "an excellent pest rifle".

The reason I don't have a rifle in 416 Rigby is the recoil. I, like DagaRon have gotten recoil sensitive in my old age (57).

Having said that, I'm looking forward to, once the actions are cast, having 404 Jeffery on Montana's PH series frame and a Lothar Heavy Magnum Sporter contour barrel. It is being made as an iron sight rifle.

Hopefully I won't be too many years older when it gets into my hands. [Big Grin]

OK heres a ? I have no dought that the ol 404 is a great round hell if Ray likes its good enough for me. However why is the 404 not more popular? There is the 416 Rigby that is factory loaded as well as the 470 NE by Fed and a few others. CZ, Win, Rem, and Ruger all chamber a 416 at one time or another, Ruger started to chamber the 404 in their No1 and express rifle and then for some reason stoped. So whats the story?? Why cant I buy Federal 404 to put into a CZ550 if the 404 is that good (and I belive it is)??

only problem with the 404 is the bore is too small... and a doubel rifle shouldn't be chambered in 404...

Paleohunter,
Do you believe in marketing? The .416 became famous because Ruark wrote about his PH having one. The .404 was more of a working stiff's rifle, kind of like a Ford pickup versus a Hummer. I own a F150, Ah-nuld owns a Hummer. Which gets more airtime? Are you building a rifle to puff over or to go hunting with? Choice A is a .416 Rigby, Choice B is a .404.

Well Daga Daga Doo,
Like the famous or infamous whichever the case may be, Kobe Kobe, you have allowed your lower organs to guide your brain and that happens to young men, but time will ease your course and life will become better and you can concentrate on the correct things in life...

But you ain't gonna like it to start with!! [Big Grin] [Big Grin] [Razz]

But the 404 will ease your pain and anguish..The head butting on the door frame will soon go away and you will start wearing boxer shorts...Life is a bitch and then you die...Have a good day.

WHAT? this is an decleration of war. Besides I have to agree that it's much better to camber a double in 400 Jeffery, I guess some of you know it as 450/400 NE 3 inch. [Big Grin]

It hasn't to do with big bullets that is light for the caliber. 50 calibers around 500 grains has not and great SD. A bullet in 404, 416 or 400 that is heavy for the caliber has good penetration. Not to mention the 500-550 grainers i 458 [Eek!] .

What are you drinking today [Big Grin]

The good old 400 Jeffery or 10,75X76R is an interesting round. For all of you big bore geeks Major Powell Cotton shoot the biggest Elephant trophy with a double rifle in 400 Jeffery.

Sorry, but I think that Aktinson & Sons would be much better. or Atkinson & Humbarger as gun maker name [Big Grin] [Eek!]

Paleohunter,

The .404 Jeffery has been plagued by confusion since the day in was created.

Continental rifles call it the 10,75x73 and use a .423 bullet.

British rifles call it a .404 Rimless NE and use a bullet somewhere between .412 and .423.

Jeffery calls it after themselves.

Mauser swears that you need a magnum length action for all .375 H&H size cartridges.

Jeffery swears that you can stuff into a standard 98.

Most Americans refuse to shoot anything that doesn't wear a belt or have the word "magnum" in it"s name.

Few gunwriters or professional hunters have been paid enough to promote it.

Ruger has been the only Post-War company to actively pursue marketing rifles in this chambering. They ran into the above problems and dropped the idea. With todays methods of international communication and commerce, it seems that all of these little discrepancies could be standardized, and the shooting public coult then enjoy what is perhaps the "perfect" cartridge. I doubt it will ever happen. [Big Grin]

Kurt,
Don't forget all Custom Rifle builders make a perfect rifle that will shoot 1/2", feed everytime...

Johan,
10.76x76 MM is not a rifle caliber, it's a Coney Island foot long hotdog....I would have thought you knew that! [Razz]

Wrong, it's an caliber. It's not for those who have been on loony Island were you are from [Big Grin]

Actually this caliber uses 411' bullets for some damn reason. 10,75X76R
