RIPHornady Delivers .375 Ruger Reloading Dies
Within six days of my telephone order, tipped off by vapodog, they arrived today: .375 Ruger reloading dies. Surely they are planning to make the ammo available soon.

Item # 546415
Thanks, Vapodog.

Thanks, Vapodog.

now.....get a couple 458 win mag hulls and FL resize them and now one can determine the shoulder angle (probably) the front case diameter and the headspace of the cartridge.
Somewhere we were told the case length was 2.494 same as the 30-06.....don't remember where...

RIP www.realguns.com/archives/134.htmJoe's chamber cast is as good as it gets until brass is available.
He could not read the rim on a chamber cast.
The Hornady reloading dies specify a shell holder, Hornady #5, same as .375 H&H: .532" max rim diameter.
The opening in the base of the sizing die measures about 0.530" to .528" depending on how far in I slide the calipers. So that fits with a max brass base diameter of .532" also.
I'll bet you don't even have to turn the belt off the .458, as the belt should slide right into the die with minimal effort on the press, except for the sizing down of the .458 neck to .375 Ruger neck and shoulder ... later

vapodogone could also resize a 8mm rem mag case....and trim to length.....the reason would be to achieve the data for a chamber reamer so I could have the world's first vz-24 in 375 Ruger!!! That case of course to be a temporary headspace gauge...

RIPNot worth risking. Wait for the real specs instead of mine or your estimates.

Idaho SharpshooterRIP,
who's this Shirley (sp?) you are talking about? Does she have a sister?
A thought: take some 338 or 375 RUM brass and see if you can ease it into the FL sizer a little at a time and make some shootable cases that way. From .544 to .532 is not too much to size down, and even if you had to thin the web area a wee bit on the lathe you would still have some cases to work with.
Good Luck!!

RIPRich,
That girl Surely says the ammo will be out within the next moon, and Surely says not to waste time rigging homemade brass.
Surely does have two sisters named Sooner and Later. Sooner works at Ruger. Later works at Hornady along with Surely.

vapodogher other two sisters are Mercy and Goodness....Surely Goodness and Merecy will be with you all the days of your life....Hope they're not ugly.
BTW....none of them know squat about homebrewed brass!

RIPUh oh! Rich has me running some .338 RUM brass into a .404 Dakota die as the first step. Works very easily with the decap plug removed from the die and makes a "pretty" double-shouldered brass case: .338/.423/.338 Rum
Trim off the .338 part to 2.5" case length and finish setting the shoulder back and the neck down to .375 in the .375 Ruger die. Trim neck again until it fits in the chamber. This could finally be a found use for .338 Rum brass.

I would feel safe shooting this if it works.
Thanks for the nudge, Rich.

RIPWell, I swaged a semi-belt into the head of the .338 RUM case, trying to turn it into a .375 RUGER. I will stop this experiment for now, having learned that I can easily make rebated .404 Dakota brass from .338 RUM brass, and rebated .404 Jeffery plinking ammo can indeed be made from .375 RUM brass without much trouble.

NFMikeCerrosafe the die.....and don't call me Surely

RIPThanks for the suggestion ...
MIKERGJoe has already published the results of his "Cerrosafe-ing" of the rifle chamber.
That girl Surely was right!

RIPOne last bit from me for Vapodog:
I necked up a .300 WinMag case to .375 with an RCBS .30-to-.375 neck expander. I then ran this into the .375 Ruger sizing die with expander ball in place and bottomed it out with no effort on the press arm required. The belt measures about 0.530"to .531" in diameter, before and after resizing in the .375 Ruger die: no change.
The final case was 2.595" long with a neck length of .310" approximately.
The shoulder looks to be at least 25 degrees (25 to 30 degree eyeball range) and very close to the same location as it is on the .300 WinMag (2.196" from the boltface/cartridge base).
This "Go-Guage" chambers easily in the .375 Ruger rifle that I have.
The "No-Go-Guauge" is simply a .300 WinMag case. Bolt won't close on one, but necking it up and shaping the shoulder to a slightly sharper than 25 degree angle in the .375 Ruger die seems to turn it into a go-guage.
Vapodog, Surely says not to use this info to chamber a rifle.
Surely also says not to load these for test firing.

Surely says wait for the official specs on the brass and the chambers.
Now I am confused, because I am thinking the .375 Ruger is maybe 2.595" long and has a 30 degree shoulder. The headspace seems to be very close to that of a .300 WinMag in distance from boltface to shoulder.
The only thing I feel sure about is that it has a .532" max head and rim diameter and no belt.
Cerrosafe does not tell all in the hands of just anybody.

prof242RIP,
Thank you for your efforts in measuring the dies. I feel vindicated now about the info I put on the forum from my friend at Hornady.

sdgunslingerRIP......you are a patient man........I'd be altering and fireforming 300 Winny brass at record speed and making that 375 smoke.....grin

Idaho Sharpshooterhowsabout pulling the decapping rod and running a an 8mag necked up to 375 trimmed to about 2.65" into that FL sizer?

RIPRich,
I'll go do that and report back as a check on the indicators from the .300 WinMag. I'm guessing it will show about the same thing, but it will be a more certain show of pushing the shoulder back to the .375 Ruger headspace.

21 January 2007, 05:15
RIPI necked up the 8mmRemMag to .375 and then trimmed three cases down to:
2.650"
2.600"
2.550"
The one that seems closest to reality is the one done with the 2.600" case. After running into the .375 Ruger size die with the "zip spindle" removed and again with the spindle in place, it produced a case that was 2.590" long with a neck that was about 0.310" long. Shoulder is 25 to 30 degrees by eyeball estimation. I can't be sure. Some spring back and slight buckling of the case body beneath the shoulder is involved here due to the undersized 8mmRemMag case body in the the larger diameter .375 Ruger die shoulder area.
Taking this source of distortion into account, I estimate:
case length estimate: 2.550" to 2.590"
neck length: 0.310" to 0.350"
shoulder angle: 25 to 30 degrees
base diameter: .532"
rim diameter: .532"
Still looks close to what you get with a .300 WinMag as far as the headspace distance to shoulder. the .300 WinMag is a "No-Go," just barely, but if you neck it up to .375 and size the case in the .375 Ruger die, it is a "Go" for closing the bolt in the .375 Ruger.
Print off the picture in the first page of the "Sell Sheet" here:
http://www.hornady.com/media/375_Ruger_Sell_Sheet.pdfMeasure it on paper. Yes, the drawing that has "NEW!" blocked across the middle of it. The paper copy seems to be life size and you get very close to actual dimensions with your caliper. if your hardware/software is different, do the proportionality thing: the bullet is .375"

Miss Surely at Hornady says the wait should be less than one moon until ammo arrives.
