I dont like the "hogsback", because they tends to kick the muzzle upwards during recoil. Then you get the scope knocking a fine halfmoon up in your forehead near the hair.
But it helps a lot just to straighten up the angle of the recoilpad to 90 degres.
I've fired many shots with those rifles, both in 416 Rigby, and 458 Lott and think they give you more recoil than nesseserly.
I have a 602 in 460Wby.(no brake!) and that has a straight classic stock. I think that rifle is better to shoot that those "hogbacks".

Arild,
We need to get you to do some exercise to build up your gripping strength, and maybe your chest and arms need some beefing up too.

Then when you are able to handle the hogback, we'll see about plastic surgery to hide the scars on your forehead, maybe a hair transplant to simply cover your whole forehead with hair down to the eyebrows. Then you can just comb the hair over the new wounds to hide them.

Seriously: You have been bit by a scope high on your forehead near the hairline? Sheesh! You deserve some kind of award for that trick! I don't know what kind of award, but maybe someone can come up with one.

Please give it up. I propose that a fake head injury of some sort would allow you to bow out gracefully from your misguided beliefs about hogbacks.

And maybe you, RIP, should try to beef up your head with some inteligence. You dont have to be a great engineer to figure out whats best of these two stock-types. Straight classic, and Hogback.
Some key words:
Force x arm = momentum.

But I shall not confuse you, so I'd take away your nightsleep with such difficult things!!

I havent had the scopes touching my head, because when i see those "hell-stocks" i know that to expect, but I've seen severals that dont.

I dont think the hair transplant is nessesearly for you my friend, because the sound of your answer looks like the hair already are that low in you forhead. And I also think the eyebrows grows together as one, and you have only one eye in the midle of the head!
You better start to find out what to buy for yourself, as a award of "lack of knowledge".

460, I have a hate for dents + scratches on my stuff...have done since a kid hence the camo tape....it is good for resale as well, everthing is brand new

Bakes yeah I am a G.Ablett fan, that article was written in 1994, I had it laminated, now I get to follow his sons careers.

Hey,
The pitch of the butt makes it hang well and does not contribute to muzzle rise.

The drop of the butt does contribute to muzzle rise, but the American stock has considerable drop too.

That hogback just hangs well on my shoulder and is very controllable with its gentle muzzle rise. It works very well with iron sights and scope.

Sissies don't like hogbacks much though, that is true.

I have over-grown the time then it was tough to get kicked from "bad rifles". After some years shooting the 460wby from the bench in t -shirt, i really don't think it is all that tough anymore. I have started to make good rifles to shoot with instead.

I find 585 Nyati, and 500 A-Square quite comfordable to shoot, if the rifle is buildt right.

But go on, tough-guy!!

(But be aware, you might grow up some day!)

Alas we were never able to convince him to take the full step to buying his own 585.

Maybe a good thing if he fires that well-

I don't need any 'naturals' making my hard earned years of flinch-blasting look like it really is.

So what!! He is NOT my GOD for that reason.

And he might not be the only guy in the whole world to know everything best, just because of that.

RIP may be a nice guy too, for all i know. But that answer he gave me for answering in this debate he sound like a SOB. And SOB's I can easely handle! (there are lots of theme!)

If I've misunderstod something, I'll be the first to apologize that.

This is an international forum that I've loved for many years now. And I have got a bunch of new friends all over the world, with the same beloved hobby as myself; shooting, hunting, hunting-dogs, and outdoor life.
The fact that not everybody has english as their first-language might, sometimes, be a reason for misunderstandings.

Maybe I'm dumb, but that first "welcome" from RIP, was hard to misunderstand, I think!

Come on, lighten up! You did some exaggerating about the recoil effects of the beloved hogback, so I had some fun with you.

Ray says I have a head so hard that brain injury would have no effect on my thinking processes, and he said that my body odor is that of a fish. Does that bother me? All in a day's fun.

It does however make me wonder how he knows these things, whether he has talked to my mother ... which makes me break out in a cold, fishy sweat ... Ray is said to get around, and have a lot of bastard children ... this has me worried about my lineage.

Hi Karl, yes I attended Long Island Mitch's school of the big bore and fired 14 3-shot groups at 100 yards off the bench in an indoor range. Most of them were sub-MOA, and they all would have been if Mitch hadn't been using me to test some experimental 900 grain hot loads!

I was a student and a guinea pig. I learned that the torque of the T. rex in even a 14 pound gun makes the rifle want to lie over onto its side and jump off the front rest, even though it wasn't a hogback, but straight and minimum drop stocked.

To prevent the righthand twist of the rifle onto its side one must use his forearm gripping hand differently, keeping the thumb on top of the barrel and gripping hard to prevent the twist.

I left Mitch with a gift for his kindness, as I did burn up 42 rounds of his ammo.
